for size reference, here's a 48"x18" shelf in the Maintenance room at my work - https://i.imgur.com/sRY1Klb.jpeg

I owned an older version of this. The racking won't or shouldn't rust. However I would say that the mechanism to keep the shelves locked is great once you put weight on it, but assembling it and moving it causes the shelves to come up all the time. It's a $60 shelf system that does work, but I'd be very cautious loading it down unless you have it attached to the wall to avoid it tipping over.

It may support a cast iron engine but it can't support me.

Seems like this set of metal shelves are able to hold a lot more weight than plastic shelves. At 800 lbs per shelf, you could put a cast iron engine on a shelf and still not be close to the weight limit.

In the pictures the shelving looks uncoated/bare metal and may be prone to rust if contacted with water. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks in advance!!

Your mileage on SafeRacks clones will definitely vary. I picked up a similar pair from amazon in the same price range (msrp, sales price (a bit more)).

The package was ungodly heavy, assembly was miserable and the shelf felt like it needed a wall tether. I shipped the other one back.

I'd see if anyone HERE can confirm that this brand and model number and their experience - the ratings on the ones that I got didn't look astroturfed but they definitely weren't in line with what I was sent.

Can't really find anything comparable on Home Depot's website, besides this (which has one less shelf):

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky...73#overlay

Maybe comparable to this (other than this has metal shelves, instead of wood)?

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Muscl...49#overlay

Can anybody provide a better comparison. Trying to figure out if this is worth it at $60. Any offerings from Lowe's or maybe even Costco? On mobile and at work, so can't spend too much time looking into this.

at $60 you can't go wrong. Don't think you'll find anything else at this price point like this. I bought 3.

I have a number of these type of units from Husky etc. The quality probably isn't as good as a $2-300 shelf unit from Husky but this looks very comparable to what they're selling at other big box stores in the $1-150 range.

Edsal with particle board has a recall for nearly a decade worth of shelving. I don't know what they fixed to be able to sell them still, but thin particle board doesn't seem the be the way to go for heavy storage applications.

18 deep and 36in wide? It's not huge but I don't think they're tiny. Larger units would have a 24in deep shelf and maybe 48in wide. This is a standard smaller size for these types of units.

agreed, especially if you have any moisture where you'll be putting them (garage, basement etc.)

These will likely (with a bit of effort) fit a standard 40-gallon breeder aquarium.

In regards to rusting, I'd assume powder coating will suffice (until you scratch or mar the coating). Then it's just bare carbon steel and that WILL rust no matter what.
