These huge hard drives seem like too much of a gamble for me, if these go bad you will lose LOTS of data.
Flip side is that if you need a lot of storage space (like if you still need 5-10+ of these drives) then it is prohibitively complex to go with smaller drives. Safest way no matter how to approach this is to have local redundancy and at least one off-site backup if your data is that important.
This one looks more "boxy" than the other 18tb drive that was on sale the same price a few weeks ago. I think that one was an Elements. I believe those are white CMR drives. These I believe inside are blue drives. No clue if it's SMR or any worse than the white and red labels usually inside the more rounded enclosures.

No one should be using drives like these unless the data they're keeping on them is 100% replaceable or using it with redundancy (to an extent). I personally use unraid at home and have since around 2008.

I was wondering about the difference too. I have several of the 12 and 14tb elements drives for my big YT channel. Apparently the difference is the My Book series has a bunch more software, including incryption. Supposedly the case runs cooler, I don't know how. I'm not going to shuck mine this time, it will be really nice to have an extra 4tb in one drive.

Any recommendations for off-site backup software that isn't super involved to setup? I can work with Linux command line etc, but don't have the time to constantly troubleshoot network issues and syncing.
Maybe now but not during Christmas time when BBuy had on sale and was taking old sd and thumb drives as trade in. It was $245 (I believe) after the 15% off.
Of course cue the time machine comments
More so that you know where the lowest price has been.

Agree! I've got 12 TB of movie data on my NAS that gives me disk redundancy, but this will serve nicely as a backup for that data if something unforeseen happens to my NAS.
