If you're looking for better $/TB, the 6TB WD Red Plus might be a good option: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08TZYBMMC?th=1

The 12 and 14tb X16s got much higher failure rate than others in the lastest Blackblaze report. Something like 4% vs 0.5%.
Just FYI.

Don't forget use case. A lot of people could benefit from ZFS, but few know about it.

Seems like the best deals are found early november.

If you have an old computer laying around you could setup UnRaid on it. Great thing about it is you can mix/match hard drive sizes.
missed the Synology sale last November and never seen them go on sale again.
I do have a old laptop laying around, but still need some hard drives

Dont think it would really work for non-desktop hardware.

"Upgraded" my four 5400 RPM 4GB NAS drives to these, and holy hell does it hum now. Almost need to put it into a closet. Seriously thinking of going back to some 5400s. Just be aware.

18tb exos 309 on Newegg with 5yr warranty. I bought these 8tb ironwolfs 40 months ago when they were 179, today I woke up to an 8 bit sector loss.29000hrs on them with 89 cycles. Surprised to see a failure this early, generally I get 50k hrs before a bit is lost.

Interesting, before I bought it my buddy sent me a report saying these had the lowest…. What about 16Tb? Amazon sent me 16Tb by accident. 🤐

BTRFS on Synology is close. I was just speaking generally, though.

ZFS over RAID is a no brainer if your system can handle it.

Bought 6 of these a year ago for a spare Synology, even though the model number is different from the prior ones and (not on the Synology list) these have been working great.

Exos drives are priced well… $230 for 14Tb.
If those are the ones from Amazon make sure you are actually getting Exos drives. Many have reported getting a different drive that does not have the same warranty. However, great drive if actually get the correct drive as they are enterprise versions I believe.

Good information. Loud drives can be annoying. What NAS do you have? I am sporting an Asustor AS6604 with 2 8TB 7200RPM Toshiba 300s, and can't hear them that often. Wonder how much the actual NAS buffers the noise of some of these faster drives. I also wonder if rubber grommets could help out if any of the noise is from vibrations.

I was surprised at the higher fail rates for Seagate. Below is the 2021 stats, and they don't seem to be as reliable as the other brands.
