As far as I know they rely on the t-mobile network similar to cheap alternatives like mint mobile.
Please correct me if I'm wrong or missing something essential why Google Fi might be worth picking over something like mint or whatever?
("currently" in the process to switch to another provider but just can't decide and always thought Google Fi is cool while travelling but I just can't justify paying so much in the months I'm not travelling)

Many of us are on Wi-Fi most of the time and don't need unlimited mobile data. Especially those of that are WFH. Even pre-pandemic most workplaces had WiFi.
Google Fi has really good spam call blocking. I can't compare it to other carriers, since I've been on Fi for years.

I don't need to use my Verizon number. I can use new number or port my GV number to Fi during the trip.
Thanks.

To check if your phone is unlocked, better to borrow a different carrier sim from a friend etc and swap it in your phone and see.
