1) You need to buy special succulent soil or regular soil + perilite. The soil needs to be fast draining to mimic the sandy desert terrain
2) Only water when the soil is completely dry, stick your finger or an object through the first 0.5 inches, should be completely dry.
3) Water well, place in a buck of water for a few ours or drench it. DON'T get water on the leaves, because they are desert plants, they don't absorb through their leaves. Standing water on the leaves could create mold.
4) Direct sunlight, however when they are young or repotted minimize it a little.

I'm no succulent expert, but generally I shoot for a good amount of direct light, and not a lot of water. A window in a bathroom might be a good place to forget about them for a month or so at a time.
