Keep in mind how new/old your iPad is will determine whether you need Apple Pencil 1 or 2. Each iPad only works with only one or the other, if at all (older iPads support neither).

You can use Apple Pencil (1st generation) with these iPad models:
iPad (9th generation)
iPad (8th generation)
iPad mini (5th generation)
iPad (7th generation)
iPad (6th generation)
iPad Air (3rd generation)
iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st or 2nd generation)
iPad Pro 10.5-inch
iPad Pro 9.7-inch

You can use Apple Pencil (2nd generation) with these iPad models:
iPad mini (6th generation)
iPad Air (4th generation)
iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) and later
iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation)

FYI if you have a dead Apple Pencil due to battery issues, you can bring it to the apple store and they will replace it for $29 if it's out of warranty.

I just did it today, make sure to be able to show them the apple page that says the pricing. There are no diagnostics for the Apple Pencil, they will just have to believe you that it won't hold a charge. The First Tech I dealt with didn't know about this but when she asked a more senior genius, they explained it.

Scroll to the bottom of this page to see the listing:

Was about to buy a new pencil because of the battery till I stumbled on this info
Note: only buy this if you have an applicable iPad already. The batteries don't like being drained all the way and it's super easy to brick the pencil if you don't charge like 1-2 times a month even without use

Thanks for the info. I thought it was backward compatible, but I guess not. I was thinking of buying the iPad (9th generation) 2021, but I think I'll wait until the new release later this Fall.

Hopefully the new iPad will use the 2nd gen Pencil.

There is absolutely no reason to buy the 1st gen apple pencil. Aliexpress has compatible apple pencils for $17-22, my wife has 2 for her iPad mini.

I wouldn't hold my breath on them doing anything drastic for the regular iPad. Seems to be like the iPhone SE; Newer chip, same everything else basically. Doesn't hurt to wait regardless since I've seen these prices come and go. In any case you can get a "refurbished" pen or an alternate one if you don't care about precision as much (they work well for taking notes but idk beyond that)

The easiest way, does it have lightning port charger? Then its pencil 1 since thats how it charges. Pencil 2 is wireless charger as all those ipads have no lightning port.

The new iPad Air uses the second Gen pencil; it has a usb-c port so couldn't charge the first Gen

The ones available cheap on Amazon, or AliExpress, are generally the second generation. You can buy more simple pens, but they are normally aren't the active stylus type. If you want to do more pro style art, you'd probably want to pay for the real Apple Pencil. (Or get a newer iPad that works with the second Gen)
