You can likely get a cheaper 2TB Gen 4 drive with slower speeds and honestly, you won't see difference in real world usage on a console.
If for a PC, just get a Gen 3 and save some money.

There are some specific use cases that will benefit from Gen 4 drives. For me right now, it's video editing. In the future, Gen 4 speeds might be important as games start supporting direct access storage on PC. But that's most likely a ways off before we see any real world games using that technology to a significant way.
This is overkill for the overpowered laptop. You'll never get the full potential speed. A gen 3 is what you need. I went with the crucial p5 2tb CT2000P5SSD8 for my 15" overpowered laptop. If you have a microcenter close to you it goes on sale once in a while. I got mine for $169 2 months ago.

That's the great thing about having non proprietary technology unlike the Xbox Expansion Card which is still $400 for 2TB and 1TB for $220, price will keep dropping over time.

I have the SN750 and the SN850. There is a noticable boost in performace switching between the 2. I just did that recently and you can tell the difference.
Direct Storage is already out for Windows, and "Forspoken," a game with Direct Storage implementation, is coming out in October. They've already shown off 1 second load times. There's a good chance that other games will implement it before then, too.
It's backwards compatible with gen3 slots but you won't get the gen4 speed. So basically it'll work on your board but you won't get the full speed.
