ASUS ROG Upgrade help please

9 10 March 26, 2022 at 06:14 AM Crucial.com
I own a ASUS ROG GL502VMK (U3E1) laptop It was new in 2017. I use it for everything including gaming. According to Speccy this motherboard has 4 memory slots with1 being used with 16 GB of RAM. The installed memory is reported as DRAM Freq 1197.2MHZ

OK that's the background: The laptop is acting slower and sometimes crashes while playing games. I will be taking it apart and cleaning it to remove dust. When I do that I want to add more ram but I get confusing information from the Crucial website configurator thing.

I find https://www.crucial.com/memory/dd.../ct9960897 it is DDR4-2666

Basically I don't want to buy this and then find out it doesn't work or is not compatible with the existing memory.

Can I get some advice?
Thanks

0. Save any important files you can't afford to lose to external / cloud storage. 0.5 If you have a spare drive available go ahead and clone the original to it 1. Pull the operating manual, the manufacturer's spec sheet ( this may indicate the maximum amount of ram the system can use, good for a starting point, but do a search to see if other folks have been able to use more than the manufacturer's stated limit ( any upgrade guides/sites/videos for your particular model, also check for opinions to see if it would make a significant difference in games and day to day usage ) also get the service manual ( if there is one ) and locate, favorite, save, and print any dissasembly / repair guide videos or webpages ( if there are any to be found ) like https://youtu.be/jZAe2WAdA2Q. 1.5 download and run cpu-z to get another idea of what your memory specs are and how the laptop is making use of it. 2.0 Take basic precautions against static electricity. 3.0 If you are still using a regular hard drive go to step 0 and step 0.5 immeadiately just to be certain you are prepared for a potential hard drive failure ( even if you have already switched to a ssd, you have been warned ) 4.0 Once you have the actual memory chip out, pull the manufacturer's spec sheet on it as a reference. 5.0 Assuming its easy enough to get to consider cleaning ( circuit safe liquids only ) and repasting ( with some really good stuff, check around for recommendations ) the cpu / gpu heatsinks. Clean the fan(s) VERY gently. SOFT brushes and GENTLE air ONLY. All for now.

You may get slightly better performance out of a match pair of ram (i.e. not using the the existing). Computers will run ram at the speeds of the slowest / worst ram you have installed (clock frequency and cas timing). DDR4-2666 should run fine at DDR4-2400 speeds.

As to acting slower and crashing it could be:
-Storage, depending on the type and condition of your storage (SSD or HDD) it could be to blame. What kind and size drives do you have? Upgrading the storage is likely to keep it usable longer.
-Software there's a chance a clean install of windows would help
-Heat. In addition to dust, you could have fans with failing bearings or thermal paste that's drying out and is conducting heat poorly.
-Bad ram, you can run a memory test but it's another reason you may want to just replace the ram you've already got.

In general, gaming laptops tend to run hot and in general often have somewhat shorter lifespans compared to other laptops.
