I think it needs to be called out more clearly that this is NOT a NAS device. There is no network port on this box, you can not connect it to the network. There is only a USB-C port on this device, which can be connected either to an existing QNAP NAS device or directly to a laptop/desktop. The only difference between this an a external enclosure is that this box lets you add multiple disks in a RAID configuration.

Just think of it as an external hdd enclosure.
It will be good at STORING media for Plex but it will NOT be able to act as your Plex server by itself.
I can speak to Synology and can say that they have idiot proof the whole setup. I literally bought these drives on Black Friday, shucked them, and threw them into the 2 bay, added the provided extension for Plex, and I was off to the races.
Hope this helps!!
Edit: one more thing is that the Synology 2 bay has space to expand RAM Incase you need more performance. I know I may sound a fanboy but I am really impressed by the whole system and if you are looking for a "set it and forget it" device, I really recommend checking their line out.

Can I just use a raspberry pi with some (maybe shucked) externals, and call it a day?
edit:
Would this work well with these 14tb drives?

And would it work with Plex and similar apps for streaming/transcoding away from home? Could it backup stuff on an interval, as well as do storage server stuff for plex/emby/etc?
Edit:
I found some answers on Amazon via the Q&A section of the product page... this seems to be the same product - https://www.amazon.com/QNAP-TR-00...RC7X9?th=1

Getting a second (perhaps older, used) QNAP NAS means you can instead directly migrate your old drives. An additional benefit with having a second NAS is having your backups run over the network so your backups are in two physical locations.
These are great for JBOD. Instead of having a bunch of external drives, this puts them all in one solid enclosure. Another use case is simply extending your existing NAS's storage. These integrate nicely with QNAP NAS and can be controlled by your existing NAS's RAID controller.
Notes for QNAP NAS owners:
I had previously had it connected to my QNAP NAS in a RAID 5 configuration (managed by QNAP NAS). In that configuration I could only get about 35 MB/s in either direction. <— which is HORRIBLE performance and why it isn't in that configuration any longer.
There is also a BAD bug in QTS 5.0.x that is causing QNAP NAS devices with this connected to have performance degrade over time and create instability for the entire NAS.
Here's a QNAP forum post about that QTS bug:
https://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic....2&
Their website says it won't work with the TS-431 or "any device that cannot be updated beyond QTS 4.3.1" and my device is on QTS 5.
So I think that means it would work?
Edit: Nevermind here's a full list of compatible devices and mine is good: https://www.qnap.com/en-us/compat...ion=tr-004
