Not worth $100 when compared to alternatives. Bottom of the barrel tool from DeWalt.

It would be better to go with brushless that have more power and less battery consumption, but they are going to cost more. We have most of the DeWalt tools and since I have a few minutes to kill, here are my thoughts.

If you have a Home Depot close, go into the store and compare, but the brushless Atomic DCD709 is hard to beat for versatility around the house. It has both hammer and regular drill with a clutched chuck for driving. Just picking it up, there is nothing cheap about it. You could check out the DCD708 that is the same base tool, but without hammer drill mode. It is going to be around a $100 when not on sale and without the batteries and charger.

Don't confuse the Atomic versions as being less than the XR series, as for most of them, they are not. What they are, is typically smaller with similar power and you can tell when picking one up, as they are as solid as a brick.

The OP is probably fine for the kit, but you could pick up the much better DCD709 today with one of the newer PowerStack 2amp batteries and charger for [homedepot.com] $149, or if you already have batteries and chargers, hack this same kit for $154 [homedepot.com] where the DCD709 is net $78.27 in your cart. For the $71 difference, you could buy a new DCB115 4amp charger and 5amp battery off eBay or wherever.

You have lots of choices, but just know the OP is a brushed entry level with the cheapest and smallest batteries and charger that will work with limitations, but I will say the light that shines to the sides, but a shadow where you are working is about less than worthless. I just like the hammer drill option of the much better built DCD709 for masonry and such as moving up the ladder of quality at an increased price.

There are a couple in between, but after the 709 is the same option, but much more powerful 996 with hammer drill mode that is a beast and can be found for around $100 bare tool. Seriously, the 996 and later versions with bluetooth is a handful and why it comes with that long side handle. If it catches, you better have a really good hold on it. We have both and others including SDS versions, but the DCD709 a good all around tool for residential work that does not break the bank. You just have to decide what you want and watch for the deals.

Disclaimer is that most of use get locked in by the batteries and chargers. Top, everyday commercial usage are arguably brushless DeWalt or Milwaukee, but there are the residential grade of Ryobi with a wide selection and often deals, or even Rigid with their LSA, that if choosing brushless versions, either are probably better than the OP at a similar price. All I am saying is that nobody needs the best of the best if using occasionally, but rather the most for your money is prudent. Now, where is that grammar and spell check? Smilie

Enjoy....
