As strugglinig new-parents-to-be, I was thankful back in 2007 when we found a used carseat at a yard sale. I don't remember if it was "expired" or not, but it was still visibly in good shape. My wife said "you're not supposed to buy car seats used" but I was able to convince her otherwise. I can understand that if something bad happens, you'll never forgive yourself though. It was still fine four years later with baby #2.

Just remember, everything works until it doesn't. I probably would have done the same thing in your situation as well so i'm not on a pedestal here, just something to think about.

In 97 I also bought a used baby seat. It had the plastic lining in it not even cloth. I made a new cloth seat cover that was padded and took out the plastic. 18 m ago the hospital would not let my grandson leave the hospital without a new carseat. Literally 3 nurses and his doc checked to make sure he fit in it and they made him stay in it for 4 hours before they would let him go home, because he was tiny they needed to make sure he wouldn't have any breathing problems being strapped in on the way home. Last nurse came I. To say goodbye checked the expiration date and it was that month. Said nope you can't go w this seat. They called cps, my son called in a panic. Seat was a $250 seat for his cousin and they used it for there first son Crazy.. any way one of the other nurses came in from the hallway after she learned what happened called a different cps worker explained and the cps lady said go get a new one outta the closet stash. I guess they keep them there for people that don't have one. I get it but I thought the new seat was a peice of junk Literally. I said no way is he riding in that thing. Ordered him a new top of the line consumer reports when they got home. (Just like i did for there first kid) My son was so pissed, man was he pissed that they had called cps. He said they didn't even give me time to call you 90 min away or to go buy a new one. I could have had a friend pick one up and bring it. They wonder why people get so upset it was really uncalled for. It's time to upgrade to a booster but we bought both of there's from buybuy baby so ill check there first. Thanks for the heads up

The danger with used car seats is that you don't know if it's been in an accident. It could look fine but be structurally compromised. Not trying to make you feel bad, just sharing if other parents to be are reading this.

Anyone know why there is an expiration on car seats?
The plastic can become brittle over time and the make the seats unsafe.

There's a high chance your dashboard is melted from heat/UV though. There was an extended warranty for 2008+ Camry since the problem was so prevalent (had the dash in my 2010 replaced by Toyota due to this problem)
hmm melted? really? So much for legendary Toyota reliability

I just sold my 2010 Highlander with 160k+ miles for $9k. And the dealer listed it for $12.5K Crazy market

Bought 2 extra Uppababy car seat bases off FB marketplace for cheap, can we just trade in the bases without the car seat?
Doesn't matter what you trade in. You don't need to trade in anything. Walk by the big box where you dump them. Dump whatever it is in (or not). Get the code from the box. Done.

Has anyone been able to find out what 'select baby gear' means?

I don't need a stroller or another car seat.

Anyone that says plastic becomes brittle and unsafe, then why isn't there a recall on any car over 2 years? Interiors are largely plastic. We'd all be in death traps if that were the case.

I'm wondering if it's the "baby gear" listed at the bottom of the Car Seat Trade-in event page.
