No this is the old 801 model, probably clearing it out. I had one and it constantly lowered itself down, the height adjustment was very cheap and loose. It destroyed part of my lawn. The newer 798 model has a metal adjustment that looks more robust. $150 right now on amazon, holding out for it to go on sale.

The 798 according to the specs doesn't go as low either, it stops at 0" above the ground (which is the height I used anyway) instead of like 1/2 inch below. So even if it lowers itself, it isn't going to do as much damage. I guess when using the scarifier it would be nice to be able to go lower, I did use that on the lowest setting, but that's not something you use as much as the detatcher and it looks like the teeth on that blade are larger on the new one, so I think it ends up being the same.

I assume this is the new model? Is it better than the old one?

Mine was delivered missing pieces from Amazon. I could rig it to make it keep height (some of the time) but quickly just boxed it up and dropped of for return at UPS store. This thing is very cheaply made.

I bought this last year and it's been great. I've done my lawn twice and used the scarifier about a month ago. I even lent it to 2 of of my neighbors. No issues at all and I really couldn't be any happier. It was exactly what I was looking for. Here is a video comparison with the Greenworks.

Have this exact model, have used it two seasons now front and back lawn only about 2500 sqft. If it stopped working today it was still worth the cost.

Is this powerful enough to work on lawn on clay soil?

I almost pulled the trigger on the AJ798 or AJ805 but ended up going for this AJ801 because of parts availability.

Seems hard to get parts for the AJ798 or AJ805, while AJ801 seems to have more on Sun Joe website and eBay.

For removing thatch, yes
For prepping ground for seed, not really.
It can definitely tear up your lawn if not careful!

Anyone have experience with these on St. Augustine? My grass grows well but I have some thin areas where there it doesn't grow as thick.

I have this and have used it for a few hours with no problem. Loaned it to my neighbor last year and he used it for about 4-5 hours and loved how well it worked to get the thatch up from his neglected yard. It's a beast and well made and we've not had any issues with it.

Did you happen to wash it or hose it off before it died? They get water in them but if you stand them on end, motor side up, it will drain out.

Oh it still works, literally used it 3 days ago. It hasn't died, I was just saying even if it died I already got my money's worth out of it.

Too bad these weren't sold widely between 1979 and 1990. The Irish could've really used one of these DeThatchers and would've made it very easy for them instead of more elaborate and difficult path they had to undertake.
