Dethatching is removing the raft of stuff that sits in between your grass and dirt. You can do this manually with a dethatching rake but it's very physical. Thatch can build up and keep water from permeating soil if it's too thick. Helps with absorption. People also use it before they overseed a patchy lawn. You mow low, dethatch or scar, then overseed so the seed falls on looser dirt. Lookup dethatching and overseeding on the tubes. overseeding is most successful in fall. People use it in the Spring to wake up their lawn.

Where do you get your seed? I have an acre that I want to overseed, so I'd like to figure out a decent place to get that much seed.

A couple 50 lb bags would probably be enough. If your lucky enough to have a seed store near you that would be ideal. But Lowes, True Value, etc all sell big bags. Make sure you do a little homework so you know what type of seed is best for your area.

This (805 model) is the newer version in the larger size, the one you linked to is older and had some issues.
AJ798E is the new version of the one you linked (12 amp 13") and this one here is the 15" 13 amp newer version. With this sale both new ones are the same price right now.
