Anybody know how this compares to older brushed models? I'd totally buy this if it is significantly better.

Definitely better, more powerful, better battery life, etc., etc., etc. It's considerately better than the the Gen X5 Brushless version as well.

Is it better in general or only with matching Octane batteries? I only have non-octane batteries and I thought I read they are discontinued.

Better with any of the batteries. You can still find Octane batteries on ebay and the newer 'Max Output' batteries are the replacement for the older Octane batteries. That being said, if you only need a circular saw for around the house and you're happy with your old one, no real need to upgrade.

You might be better off using your current one for light duty, quick tasks and then getting a corded saw for more intensive jobs (e.g. lots of pressure treated lumber, etc.). Regardless, I've found using the correct blade for the wood/job helps a lot as well.
