150k Amex Platinum Offer

American Express is offering a 150k bonus offer on its American Express Platinum card. Still has a $695 annual fee, but this is the highest I've seen.

https://www.americanexpress.com/u.../platinum/ - YMMV on points offered

Can't you just overpay your federal taxes with an extension on/before Tax Day, then do your taxes later and get the refund?
That's what I was thinking. Buffet used to always complain he pays less tax than his secretary. Everyone replied you can voluntarily pay as much tax as you want. So just max out your cc and give it all to the IRS and slowly over the years use it up. Problem is if you owe too much year after year you'll be hit with penalties.

If you have a balance, will the IRS just send you a check for the extra amount? Seems like an easy way to MS if that is the case. I wouldn't risk MSing with the IRS but some SDers are nuts and they don't care.

are you looking at the card issuers travel portal- where you generally get 1 cent a point (maybe 1.25-1.5 for chase with certain cards).... or are you looking at point transfers to airlines where you can get better value than that even for many coach flights? (and also for Hyatt hotels specifically with Chase-- Hotels usually suck for this otherwise)

Generally looking at point transfers to airlines. Most of the flights I look at, I compare the retail $ amount of the flight to the points needed for the same award flight and it comes out to about the same price like a $200 flight would be 20,000 points needed for example.

I've also never really had an opportunity to use it on the ones where you get a bonus when transferring though. Like Avios is 1 to 1.4x right now for transferring points I guess? Or Aeromexico 1 to 1.6x, but I don't generally fly those

the referral code i can offer gives the 10X on dining up to $25,000, but only 100k points.
Did you try opening the referral link in an incognito browser window? I had a friend send me a link that came up normally for 100K so I tried it in incognito and it jumped to 150K.

Yeah avios is 1.4 right now from Amex... as I mention I recently booked a flight that was ~350 cash... with the bonus I got over 3 cents a point, but even without it I was getting a bit over 2.

Beware that there is language in the boilerplate that if you cancel the card with 12 months they may, in their discretion, recall your bonus points. That could mean to get those 150K bonus points you are going to be on the hook for $695 × 2 or $1390 in fees.

It is once per lifetime, but "lifetime" is usually about 7 years.
So, they calculate our lifetime in dog years? Wink

You have almost a month beyond the 12 months to pay the statement that includes the second annual fee. So no, you don't have to pay 2 annual fees.

If it is anything like any of the Chase cards, you will have 30-40 days after the first year to review and cancel, and get full refund of your second year's AF. Also, you are free to use any of the benefits within that 30-40 days.

Yup... which is why the "ideal" time to open a new card can depend on when the benefits reset so you can maximize double dipping.

For example the best time for this card would likely be to get it (in hand) mid-may... this would let you get 4 uses out of the Saks credit instead of 3 for example... (1H 22, 2H 22, 1H23, and, just barely, 2H23).

Similar deal with the Dell credits on the Biz version.

(nearly all the other benefits reset on calendar year, so long as you're not opening in late December you're probably fine for double dipping)

But one must balance that against if a given signup bonus is only available for a limited time.

I recall Sapphire Reserve used to have calendar year benefits that they changed to Anniversary to avoid the above. I still have CSR and plan to keep it until it's due for renewal later this year. Tempted between AmEx platinum and Venture X (bonus now 75K, but only $6K spend needed).

I got the card info as soon as I was approved.

Found a referral link on the web and it worked great for the 150K. Thanks OP!
