In general I agree that modern appliances are no where near as reliable as older ones. However, a few things, modern ones are significantly more energy/water efficient than older older ones which help deal with the cost (or use the energy savings to buy an extended warranty). Also, while older appliances would run no matter how much you abuse them, the maintenance requirements on these are more important (eg Leave front door washer open, drain the pump on washer (my lg has a spot in the front to drain with a little filter), vacuum dust away from the compressor on fridge, run periodic cleaning cycles on dishwashers/washer, etc). Also for appliances connected to water, make sure your water pressure is within spec (install a reducer if it's too high) and add a water softener if your water is too hard.

Yeah it's a pain, but energy efficiency and modern features are taking priority over simple and reliable. You see the same changes with cars.

Maytag was a workhorse, but Costco stopped carrying them. Whirlpool and kitchenaid are good. Both are manufactured by whirlpool, but the finishes and build quality are better on Kitchenaid.

No modern appliance brands are worth it.

They are engineered with planned obsolescence 💯 %

We have had all of them. GE, LG, Samsung, Maytag, all with high ratings from consumer reports.

We buy extended warranty for big appliances.
