May as well just keep your existing phone for 6 more months then use the new one once it unlocks.

According to this^ it says 180 days.
Years ago when i did the 4 lines port + 4 years Amzn Prime + 4 free Samsung Galaxy J7s for $100 deal … some of the devices just laid around in drawers without service and unlocked after 6months thru their app. YMMV on that tho, dk if that's since changed.

And did the metro store charge you any fees? Thanks

You sign up for a Boost Mobile $1 promo deal, wait for it to arrive, activate your Boost Mobile line/number, then port that number to Metro within the first month to avoid continued Boost Mobile charges? Does this deal require you buy a plan, or can you literally buy the phone, port in the # (onto a plan? So a plan is required?), then wait 6mo for it to be "liberated"?
Would appreciate if anyone can explain the mechanics of this in detail for those of us who literally are just in it to get a phone, don't care about # or service from any provider. (Already have Verizon post-paid and trying to get new phones for parents)
EDIT: I'm guessing Metro PCS plan is required during the 6 months, you can't just have Metro "hold" your ported # w/o service, if I am understanding the mechanics of # transfers correctly. So that would mean
$216 (phone + tax average estimate)
$20 activation fee (per Metro PCS fine print at bottom of page)
$35x6 (cheapest plan + taxes/fees) = $210
$1 boost mobile #
---------------------------------------------------------------------
~$447 total to acquire phone

The reason you would use the boost mobile one dollar monthly plan is so that you have a phone number to transfer, as you must port in to take advantage of this metro offer. It's like a burner number that you don't need and don't care if you lose it. This way you don't have to continue paying for six months of service with metro.

I'm already a Metro customer, so I'd port in a Boost number, but I would want to transfer my old Sim/Number to this new phone and add new Sim/Number (that will be soon cancelled) to old phone...
Have you found any info on your situation?
