60 day unlock once activated. Don't have to pay for second month for automatic unlock. Looking at $125+tax, but RSIM should work during the 60 day period.

How much total to spend in order to get it unlocked? I'm just looking ahead to see if this is the cheapest route to unlock the phone outright versus buying used (YMMV on condition) and or from various vendor (guessing more than $200 for unlocked right from the get go)

Approach this carefully, with eyes wide open. The 60-day unlocking period only applies to Tracfone (group) phones that are activated on the Veizon network, with the original SIM card. Walmart Family Mobile uses exclusively the T-Mobile network-- so if activated on WFM, the 12-month unlocking period would apply.
I don't know if it's possible to "re-brand" a WFM phone as a Tracfone or Total Wireless phone-- a picky process.

Agree, the WFM unlock details don't make sense since WFM uses T-Mo & not Verizon.
Looks like another bad copy & paste document that doesn't even apply to WFM.

FYI, they're charging tax on the full ($250) price. So with the one month of the $25 service, the total came to $150 out the door in CA.
You've got your usual state sales tax but you also get charged whatever your state requires for cell service (911 fees etc) some are pretty high - it's 9.83% in CA.

Those concerned about the unlocking: the same deal is available when activated in store on Total Wireless or Straight Talk (both Tracfone brands too). Total Wireless is for sure Verizon service.

Is that still the case? If you look at their website, all of the T-Mobile branding seems to have been removed. WFM is done by Tracfone, and Tracfone are owned by Verizon, so it would be odd for them still to be signing people up to T-mobile.

To be fair, I'm not 'sure'. But I think if it had changed, we'd be hearing about it from users forced to change, from the industry cellphone sites, and WFM would be trumpeting about it.
Perhaps if @kifbunk could check the SIM card, we could become 'sure'. T-Mo SIM would start with 8901240 or 8901260. Verizon would start with 89148.
I wouldn't be surprised if Verizon decided not to provide free advertising for T-Mo by touting it on the WFM website.

I activated a new sim on TF T-Mobile since VZ bought the TF companies last Nov. VZ had to agree to keep the ATT/T-Mo service available for a year or two so pretty sure WFM is still using T-Mo. To be safe I'd recommend calling WFM and find out official unlock policy before buying.

I just looked at the Walmart Family Mobile BYOD page, and it states:
"Please take note, you will need an unlocked, VoLTE, T-Mobile compatible device with LTE Band 2,4,and 12 support"
But, as noted above, the Tracfone brands aren't good at accurately updating their website. (Still, I think Verizon would at least make sure they got this right, if it had changed.).

Cheapest 1-month plan on Total Wireless to get the phone activated is $25.
