I'm thinking it maybe the return packaging.
It was serendipitous that I heard about the recall on Slickdeals as I was about to toss the air fryer out due to it catching fire.
I didn't include the receipt for the air fryer though as it wasn't required and was trying to get the full $50 gift card. I'm hoping this cheap basterd tactic doesn't jeopardize my return and I don't end up with nothing; time will tell...
Air Fryers cook with forced hot air circulating around the food to make things crispy; no oil is used.
Deep fryers cook food by submerging them in hot oil; no forced circulated air is used.
As for the condition of the air fryer that I returned; it looked brand new and you couldn't tell that it had small flames coming out from the top control panel.
I assumed the fire happened because of gunk/residue built up on the top burner after 2 years of usage and I was at fault. But considering the recall, I'm thinking it was a design flaw; perhaps the top burner being too close to food.
I seriously considered donating the fryer due to its excellent cosmetic condition but I didn't want to play a possible part in someone's house burning down ergo I planned on throwing it out. But 2 days before my scheduled trash pickup I heard about the recall at Slickdeals and the rest is cheap basterd history.
I'm hoping to get the full $50 gift card as I didn't include a receipt. According to UPS tracking; Best Buy received the fryer at 5/17; now I play the waiting game I suppose...

Did you include your recall confirmation # within the returned package? I didn't and just realized I probably should have even though the return instructions didn't mention needing to do so. I'm guessing the shipping label had some information on it that identifies each person's return. Or maybe they associate the UPS tracking # with a person's recall. But in case the shipping label gets messed up or they somehow lose the shipping box while processing the return, then there's nothing inside the package to identify a return. Maybe I'm just overly worried and there's nothing to be concerned about.
If they are doing this recall in an ethical fashion, why clean it before returning it to be tossed in a landfill? But we all know that their MBAs are going to extract "residual value" by shipping them to be sold in Africa or some other third world hellhole with no consumer protections.... so again, why clean it to make that easier?

I had the same concerns and printed out a Dymo 7x2 inch label with the Recall Registration Confirmation number on top of the box just to increase my chances of getting the $50 gift card.
However, I'm assuming the provided shipping label had all the relevant info in its barcode. I empathize with your unease though; sending back the recalled item without any invoice or any identification papers except the outside shipping label would have anyone worried IMO.
I still haven't heard anything back from Best Buy yet as well. I guess I'll wait another week before switching into full paranoid cheap basterd mode

I was planning on giving the air fryer away due to its excellent cosmetic condition and the fact that it still functioned despite catching fire. (It was pretty minor; just a few small wisps of flames coming from the top of the control panel with very little smoke.)
I decided against this because I didn't want to have the guilt and worry of someone having to deal with the risk of it catching fire again. 2 days before I was going to toss it out I heard about the recall on Slickdeals, returned the fryer which Best Buy received on 5/17 and now I'm hoping to get a $50 gift card; fingers crossed…
I was told gift card will be emailed 3-6 weeks after receiving package. Guess I have to be patient for few more weeks.
