Nah. 4ah vs 1.5 ah battery. Full size recip vs one hand. Lights don't have motors. Ryobi oscillators aren't too great in any version. The drill is a non issue, esp. considering the versions included in these kits. Your set was cheaper, has more tools, and more battery capacity. Around the house with the particular tools in these sets you won't notice a difference outside of that smaller second battery. The difference brushless provides doesn't work out to anything meaningful with the way these bundles are set up.

If someone is using a tool so much that they're wearing out brushes, they're likely a professional who uses it several hours a day five days a week and that person is probably not buying low end Ryobis.

There're many reasons why someone might want to go with the nicer brushless tools, but the practically non-existent need to replace brushes shouldn't be one of them.

Oh, and another thing, I used to replace brushes in DeWalt products for others - but honestly, by the time those tools needed a brush change, they were so old and beat up that I questioned putting the time and expense into them versus just getting something modern.

Definitely no "need" to upgrade. I got that $75 deal, and all those entry-level tools are perfectly serviceable.

The brushless stuff is a nice step up in power, efficiency, and features, but won't make-or-break any job. For example, the light on the brushless tools stays on for ~15 seconds after you release the trigger. Which is surprisingly nice if you're relying on the light. With the brushed versions, the light is only on when the chuck is spinning. Overall the brushless tools just feel a bit more premium.

Think of it like cars. Nobody needs a nice car. But… they're nice.

Honestly, I had the brushless oscillating tool in this set and returned it for a brushed one. The brushless version didn't have a variable speed on the trigger, which matters to me if you're cutting through anything besides drywall. They're also now all coming in compact, so it was a little bit smaller. It's nice to lug around the compact drills for the weight, but I miss the versatility of my old Ryobi drill (brushed, blew up while going through some ceiling joists in the attic) that was a bit larger because you could keep different drill bits in the magnet catch-all. I think Ryobi is trying to make their tools smaller with the expense of features (magnets, belt clips, bit holders). Starting to wonder if I need to start buying more Milwaukee stuff that my friends rave about.

Have you used the 5.5? It's a really really cheap light duty plastic saw. It's ok for the occasional crosscut on a 2x4, but won't stand up to heavy use. My first one got trashed trying to rip 3/8 plywood and the replacement got trashed ripping particle board. Both times the bearing failed.

The Chicago electric 5.5 from harbor freight is better.

I have the same saw. It was included in a kit that was a gift so don't know what they paid. I've had it for years and it's still going strong. I've used it a ton for small stuff, mostly cross cuts and thin sheet goods, no complaints. If it only lasted me a year I'd be complaining to Ryobi big time.

I have the same exact saw for years, it's held up fine, nothing broken on it even though it is pretty cheap plastic. It's served me well for light work. No complaints. I use Ridgid tools now..

You will go broke owning Ryobi tools. The batteries suck and die every couple of years. I own Ryobi, DeWalt, and Milwaukee. I replace far more Ryobi batteries because they stop holding charge. Red and yellow batteries last much longer.

I'm heavily invested in the Ryobi eco system because I can't afford red, yellow, or even blue. I'll be happy if the batteries make it past 5 yrs.

I do have 1 yellow tool, a 28v circular saw that was purchased over 10 yrs ago. Amazingly, the 28v battery I originally bought separately for it still works! It's dated 2007! It's lost some capacity but the fact it's still good for random crosscuts here and there is impressive for 15 yrs old.

Ryobi batteries die just after the 3 year warranty expires. I've gotten smart and call in and get replacements at 35 months.

Ryobi owner here in loving it. This is probably not a bad set for the money, but just a few things to consider. As a few people have pointed out, for some odd reason they got rid of the bit holder and the magnetic tray for screws and nuts off the latest generation of brushless drills and impact drivers. They also put a much dimmer light on these then the Gen 1 brushless. All that may not bother some people, but for me I'll stick with Gen 1 for now. I think a truly great version will come out somewhere down the road but these aren't quite it, at least not for me. The p238 impact driver is the one to beat. And the p239 is a pretty freaking sweet impact also.

One other quick thing to consider. You'll want to be careful with the reciprocating saw. The only Ryobi tool I broke was my brushed saw. Just keep in mind these are for light work and are definitely not a chainsaw. If you put them through a lot of stress they will break the shoe that holds the blade off. It's a known weak point in all the Ryobi sawzalls. Hopefully they can come out with the more robust design down the road...

Similar boat here. Got a hand-me-down Ridgid drill set and did the LSA for new 18v batteries! So was wanting a full set and was thinking father's day deals would be the time. I'm open to ryobi but thinking Ridgid is the way to go, especially with LSA and hoping there are some deals before/for fathers day
