How does that work? Will they upgrade to r5?
You call Canon, ask for their upgrade program then they will ask you for details including a serial number of your current/old gear. Then you get a discount on new gear but it's only over the phone. You can upgrade to any camera they have in stock but the discount may vary. I believe standard is 20% off new, 10% off refurb devices.

I'd like to offer a counterpoint to everyone saying go for the EOS RP over this. The 90D is a relatively prosumer DSLR with tons of great features especially for video. The RP is a early gen entry level mirrorless full frame with less features, especially for video. The only advantage the RP has is that it's full frame, which I will admit is a big point.
But if you go compare the features between the two, the 90D generally fares better. In my opinion, I'd wait for Canon's mirrorless line matures a bit and has more native RF lenses to really take advantage of the system.
For now, even though DSLRs have reached their end of production, they're still a mature, solid platform that will be around for many years. The 90D is a stellar camera and IMO still beats out the RP. But don't take my word for it, go watch comparison videos online between these two cameras. Full frame doesn't automatically mean better.

I know nothing about cameras. I need a great camera that'll give high quality pics of jewelry and watches. Will this do it or do I need something else. I would also be doing videos with the said device but I do have GoPro so dont know how well is GoPro compated to regular cameras.

I appreciate all the people who comment here on the SD community. I have a related topic question. My wife has never used a camera before but I'm thinking of buying her a camera for our anniversary. I'd like to buy the newest tech which seems to be mirrorless full frame (?) but my question is if there are any photography classes or programs that would be a nice add on the gift. I'm sure I could Google this, but I trust the people using slickdeals to give me any advice they have as far as learning how to use the camera to its fullest potential, tips, tricks, etc. We travel a lot, take pictures of the kids, and I might even use the camera to take some pics of the moon or other things in the sky.

To sum it up,

A) Camera recommendation
B) Lense recommendations
C) classes or knowledge for using the camera

I've been an enthusiast photographer for the past 10 years or so and I can say that you don't need the latest and greatest if you're just starting out. You can get stellar shots on a decade old body because at the end of the day it's about the person behind the camera. It's better to learn how to use these cameras and their lenses with a smaller and simpler body at first and then from there upgrade into what suits your needs because there is no real "best for everything" kit. Each camera and lens has a specific purpose. You certainly don't need a full frame camera to start out. Honestly for $1K I'd pick up made one of the SL bodies and get a couple kit lenses maybe the 18-135 USM and a 50mm f/1.8 and that's a good starter kit IMO. @Carmen1324

This is why I love/hate SD lol
Here we go, you may have just talked me into a mirrorless setup. Would you mind linking the adapter you use?

Now… If SD could just help me explain the package that is going to arrive from Cannon to my wife 😓
Solution:

-Common bill account (unless she's a FT mom or doesn't work)
-Separate "me" money

Result:

Stay married Smilie

Hey SD community, hoping to get some of your opinions on this deal... I had my eye on the 90d back in early 2021 and had forgotten about it until I saw this deal pop up. This seems like a good deal, especially since it's a refurb directly from Canon.

Currently I'm on a SL2, would this be a good "step up" from my current body? I like the 90D as an option because I can still use all the lenses that I use for my SL2. I'm mostly a family vacation/photos of the kiddo/looking to get into astrophotography shooter... would the extra bulk this camera adds to my current body be worth it?

TIA SDers!
PhramerLA, take a look at Viovoxal's advice here regarding the 90D vs RP. Particularly if you shoot any videos using your camera. While there are some good reasons to pick the RP over the 90D; It's highly subjective. The 90D is still imho a nice upgrade for you.

For reference; I have worked as a professional photographer for roughly 9 years. I have used all the models mentioned here and many in between.

Viovaxal is sharing wisdom here; that I believes applies to most people (though not all). Don't let things like FOMO lead you astray. It's no SD if you never needed it or use the features that makes it more valuable to others.

Id agree with this.
I really enjoyed my RP for the two years I used it (now on an R6), but people dont seem to realize the 90D uses a newer sensor than the RP. The RP shares the same sensor as the 6DmkII.
There really is no need to compare the two, if you want to move into FF (with all the generic benefits and drawbacks you can find online) and mirrorless (in this case, I mostly mean AF subject tracking) then the RP is the choice at this price.
If you need the extra reach, stay with the 90D and its very impressive sensor (considering we still dont have a mirrorless follow up to the 7D series)

I have to respectfully disagree with much of the advice. Compared to the RP, don't go by common wisdom. This is the newest, best APS-C sensor vs. the oldest full frame sensor.

The 90d will do better in low light(!); is far superior in FPS; will correctly use the lenses you have; is a more "pro" feeling camera; far superior full sensor 4k video. Although the RP has 26Mpixels, using your crop lenses will reduce the resolution to be a measly 10MPixels (26M/(1.6*1.6)). Staying on an EF-S means all the depreciated EF lens are easy to use, readily available and cheap. Canon has many really great R mount lenses but check the prices; they have been slow to introduce less expensive ones.

Alternatives:
90d vs m6 mark 2 w/view finder: same sensor, much smaller package, very, very similar.
90d vs. R: the R offers real world better performance but at a higher price.
90d vs R5/R6/whatever: this is the meat of where the full frame mirrorless has benefit but for a lot more money.

90d vs. RP: if you like your lenses, 90d. If you didn't own any lenses, honestly, I would save for the R. The weak RAW performance and the 5FPS would make me nuts.

90d vs Keep the SL2: I went from the SL1 -> 70d > 80d. If you always shoot in P mode; or don't shooting fast moving subjects; or don't use RAW; or don't post process images; you might stay where you are. The SL2 uses the sensor from the 80d and is quite decent.
Good luck!

This. Exactly this. I watched a ton of reviews debating between keeping the SL2 or upgrading to the 90D or RP

At the end of the day, you're totally right: I like my lenses and would like to continue using them without an adapter, selling them and re-investing in R lenses would just cost way too much money.

Upgrading to the 90D for someone like me that mainly uses their camera for stills makes little sense as most of the upgraded functionality is on the video side. Sure, you get a higher megapixel sensor but for a hobbyist like me, I don't really need it.

I noticed you said shooting in RAW on the 90D would be more advantageous, but I shoot in RAW on my SL2 and post in Lightroom for some excellent results… not sure what you meant?

At the end of the day, I decided to keep my SL2, sell a couple of my "redundant" lenses and save up for a nice EF mount lens… which will likely only get cheaper as time goes on.

Thank you to all the SDers that offered all their guidance, this community rocks!

"shooting in RAW on the 90D would be more advantageous"
The 90d has a bit better dynamic range. Raw is needed to, for example, pull up shadow details. The 90d will be little better.
Good luck!

Damn you SlickDeals!

I wasn't aware of the Canon Upgrade Program (866) 443-8002, option 2) until viewing this thread. I just ordered a refurbed R5! That sent me back a bunch of money.

Last I called (january to order my R6) any R5 model new or refurbished was excluded from the loyalty program.
