Monoprice just rebrands Tuya stuff for their Wifi IOT "Stitch" brand, both on the hardware and software level. This particular device is made by Shenzhen Hysiry Tech under the 2AKBP-X5 FCC ID, and is rebranded and sold as the Aoycocr X5P (and probably others).
The original version of this smart plug used an ESP8266EX SoC, and could be used with the Monoprice app, Smart Life, and probably even the Tuya app. Being a standard ESP chip, it could even be flashed with a custom firmware like ESPHome or Tasmota. Obviously once connected to an app, it could be integrated into cloud-based control from Apple/Google/Amazon.
The newer versions have moved to a Beken BK7231TQN32/Tuya WB2S SoC, so it should still work with the apps (and Tuya integration for Home Assistant and the like), but I don't think there is a way to flash Tasmota/ESPHome yet. Someone is working on a third party firmware here [elektroda.com], but I haven't purchased any devices with non ESP chips giving me a reason to try it yet.

Since nobody mentioned it yet, I haven't gotten this smart plug but my first one was round like this. They don't show many pictures of it in the wall because they don't like showing that it blocks the other outlet so you can't plus other stuff in. Pretty annoying for me personally but perhaps someone else can correct me if this is smaller than it appears.

Most of the compact smart plugs in this form factor are rated for 10A, and generally use a Chinese 10A/277VAC relay like this [githubusercontent.com]. I wouldn't hook up a fridge or 1800W space heater running on high, but lights and most general consumer electronics should be fine.

Review numbers look good, but comparisons to Kasa imply these are not nearly as easy to set up.

I'm sure it does block the other outlet. I use a 4-6 inch extension which makes the second outlet usable. I have 13 of them in my house that all use the smart life/tuya app

Iirc you can use these with the Smart Life app instead of the Monoprice app — unifying devices from different brands and complete Alexa support

While not awful, the Govee app is inferior imo. Tuya based plugs using Smart Life is a better experience.

This has been my experience as well. Always in the lookout for more esp sockets to side load tamsota. They are tough to find these days.

How do people typically use these smartplugs? For lamps and stuff? I can't really think of how else they can be used.

Any way to hook this up to my deepfreeze and get alerts if the power goes out? Ie. Something along the lines of a continuous ping every 5m. And if it can't reach internet (presuming power down) it sends me a notification.

Aren't the majority of smart plugs rated for 12 or 15a instead? Wouldn't trust this with any more than simple lights.
10A * 110V = 1100W. Most household items don't use even close to that much power. Of course I wouldn't plug this into fridge/AC/microwave/space heaters/hair dryers.

I don't think it's possible by itself ... You'd need a cloud based service to notify you if power goes out and a device has been disconnected since something like this would have no power to send you a notification (there's no battery). Something like the Abode alarm system would do that for you, since it's cloud based. you could theoretically just plug this into the another plug on the circuit if you're concerned about running too much power through the sensor.

Do you have to set this up on another app first to be able to control it with Alexa? Or you can just add it to your network right from the Alexa app? If it's the former I'll just stick to Wyze plugs since I already have the app for that.

Tons of different options. I don't have this particular model, but I use ESPHome and Tasmota flashed smart outlets for power monitoring and switching. A few things that come to mind:
  • Auto shut off a connected device a set period of time after it is turned on and starts drawing power, or goes above/below a specific threshold.
  • Monitor energy consumption of connected devices, and create automations and/or alerts based on usage trends.
  • Plug your wireless router into the smart outlet, and have the outlet ping your router and reset power if it loses connection.
  • Connect to your washer/dryer and set up alerts to notify you when your laundry needs to be switched/is done.
  • Plus the more simplistic time or direct input based automations. (Trigger a lamp off a motion sensor, turn on lights at dusk, turn on/off a fan or humidifier based on ambient conditions, etc)

The Sonoff S31 have been my go-to for smart outlets. They do require hardware flashing with a USB to serial adapter, but don't require any soldering.
