STEP 1: Sign up for a Sony Rewards account and link your PSN profile. If you click on ACCOUNT after signup you can link both Movies Anywhere and your PlayStation Network account.
STEP 2: Add the 3 month PSNow subscription to your cart (link above) and complete checkout. If you DO NOT have any points you will pay $40. If you DO have points already then you will pay less depending upon on how much you have earned.

I did the same by holding on to last couple of PS+ codes just in case Sony came with some offer for new subscriptions.

I'd be worried that Sony completely shuts down code redemption close to launch.

It shows as a valid 1 month code when I enter it on the PS App. I plan on redeeming it on May 15.
The only people who got to take real advantage of this idea were the ones who had multiple years of both before they did the blocking.

I just tried the refer a friend thing and i don't think they give you points anymore.
Looking at the points activity section and it shows the referral. But the points show as "0".
