Warning, low L3 cache and pcie 3.0 = bad value. Go for the 5600 if you can it is a far better cpu.

It's definitely worth spending the extra $20-30 for the Ryzen 5 5600 if you're gaming. There's a 10-20% difference in gaming, and about 5% difference other CPU workloads. The Ryzen 5 5600 sometimes goes on sale for $175-185.

Really it depends on if you plan to game or not. Games really like L3, for desktop usage most people couldn't even tell a difference between the two.

There's only a difference of about 1000-ish passmark score between the two of them. Depending on what the 5600 is going for right now ($200) $50-ish for that score differential doesn't seem worth it unless you absolutely need pcie 4.

This is a new processor as of Q2 2022. Make sure that your mobo will support it, or that you have an older Ryzen on hand for updating the BIOS of your mobo to enable support this this CPU.

Unless is it is a first generation mobo, compatibility shouldn't be an issue

Oh wow thanks, youre right thats ridiculous. What a massive pita. I thought B550s supported 5k series out of the box, but looks like many of them need bios updates as well as the A520s.

Still on a B450 and updated my bios for the support as well.

If you need a motherboard, I'd wait for a good combo deal. They had this CPU + cheap 450 board for $179, but it's OOS now. Seems like they switch out the combo deals with AMD CPUs often enough, now that there's so many new AMD SKUs.

Pretty happy with the 5600 + 550 board for $250 deal they had before (especially since that motherboard can do a BIOS flash without a CPU). I think that was a $80 off combo discount.

So should i go with the 5600G for $180, or the 12100F for $100? I have an old b350 board that i could borrow a cpu from someone on reddit, or amd loaner chip.
I couldld also sell the b350 board for $50, and get some $70 intel board. But I am using ddr4 either way.

Yep. Despite this being on-sale, I still think you're better off coughing up the extra $60 for a 5600X, or just waiting for the 5600X to go on-sale.

If you're not super into gaming, and just want a Ryzen with an integrated GPU that can do light gaming, and is pretty zippy, then get the 5600G. However, if you want to do some more intense gaming, and get at least 60+ FPS, I would get this 5500 CPU (or better yet a 5600X) and pair it with a decent Nvidia or AMD card for $200-$300, if you can spare the change.

Also keep in mind that some older boards won't support the 5600G. I made that mistake already, and had to buy another motherboard after getting my 5600G, but it's a great CPU for the money. Definitely worth it when it's on sale.

Just double-check that whatever board you end up using can support the CPU, or CPU with iGPU, that you want to get.
