I have not been able to find any manual can opener that doesn't fail or rust after 6 months. They all seem to be garbage. I'd be willing to pay a premium for an heirloom built unit. Most people would.

We bought ours a few years ago. It rust after every wash as described by other reviews. Not the quality you would expect from KitchenAid.

Many sketchy verified-purchase, recent reviews... many with same/similar complaints.

Seriously, these are junky. I have had a couple that stopped working, while the WM brand keeps on working. Have a broken one sitting next to me now that I contacted KA about a month or so ago... no response.

I've had this one for years. Haven't had issues.

Can anyone suggest how to avoid these from rusting? I have owned many types of can openers and always have issues with the blade/wheel rusting after a couple of uses. Hard to wipe out the water as well to avoid rusting as the components are sharp and hard to reach.

These really are $20 normally? Home Goods, Marshalls, etc always have like 10 brands of these for $9.99 every day.

Depends on what you open but I usually just wipe it instead of washing it with the water.

Go to a thrift store and look for the old made in usa swingaway. I've found a couple over the last few months, usually a buck or two. Will probably last a lifetime.

This is not the "Kitchen Aid" quality you expect.

I've gone through 3 of these already in the last 2 years. They fall apart.

Seems like cheap garbage with a "Kitchen Aid" label stamped on it to make you think it is good quality.

Old school Made in the USA Swingaway is best, but they don't make them anymore. If you can find a used one (or new old stock), grab it, it will last a lifetime and can drive over it with a tank.

The OXO branded can openers are about the best new can openers I have been able to find.

I have never put an opener in the wash. Quick rinse after use and back in the drawer.

Another vote for this. We had the issues with rust or worn gears on many low- (dollar store variety LOL) to mid-end ($15-20) price range ones we've tried. We finally took the plunge 5 years ago on this OXO one, and it's still going strong too.

The only mild negative is that it's bulky...

I have this one from OXO:

https://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Locking-Opener/dp/B00004OCKG/ref=sr_1_36?c=ts&keywords=Manual+... [amazon.com]

Looks pretty much unanimous here. Don't get the Kitchen Aid, spend a few more bucks and get one of the various different OXO can openers.
