Pretty sure Phantom Brave and Soul Nomad are Strategy RPGs rather than conventional JRPGs.

You might still enjoy them, just be aware that it's not necessarily apples-to-apples. Your point of reference for other SRPGs to compare to would be something like:
  • Fire Emblem
  • Shining Force
  • Final Fantasy Tactics
  • Triangle Strategy
  • Super Robot Wars
  • Valkyria Chronicles
  • Front Mission
  • Devil Survivor
  • Suikoden
Just to name a few. I'm spanning quite a few generations here, so I apologize, but your top-3 includes an SNES, a Dreamcast, and a PS3 RPG, so I assume you must been born before the Gamecube came out.

My experience is you will either like NIS games or not. I fall into the like category, so I picked them up even though I still have the PS2 versions.
