The heavy knee-high are absolutely money in winter out on construction sites. Crew is (imho) just a touch short for business/office socks unless you don't mind risking showing a little shin when seated, and accounting for lazy machine wash shrinkage and a small amount of late-day sock slouch.
Sizing: XL are just barely large enough for my size 13 feet.
Side note for you young travelers out there: I just did my first 18 hour travel day with a pair of compression socks (different brand, but 15-20mmHg merino/elastane just like the DT) and wish I'd done it sooner. Compression socks get an old-person-with-edema rep, but hfs - as someone with no issues requiring compression - my feet have never felt this good after travel, much less two 3 hours drives sandwiching a 5 hour flight and the reverse trip with a pair of 3 hour flights instead of the 5 hour nonstop. I wish I'd known about them in my 30s.

edit: I have seen doctors, but I guess I should have instead asked for slightly more padded lightweight socks

I wash them first so the "Dirty socks with holes inspector" has to suffer less.
Never had an issue that wasn't self-inflicted (like accidentally ordering the wrong size).
