Thanks...grabbed a few of these linked to donate and a few others that were $9.97 that I had been eyeing waiting for the price to drop a bit to actually keep for ourselves.

For someone who doesn't often buy kids clothes, does youth 5/6 actually mean it's for a kid that's age 5 or 6? Or are the size numbers not related to age at all?

ROUGHLY.

Take a look at random 30 year olds you know - some thin, some fat, some short some tall. Kids are the same way, you kind of need to know the kid to know which size to buy - e.g. are they big/small, short/tall.....
