The total value of products you'll receive is $399.99 plus $100 worth of other products you choose to buy later. You're getting essentially $499.99 of value, and you've spent $399.99. Thus this amounts to a $100 savings on a value of $499.99 which is a 20% discount.

I swear, I betcha these companies that deal in rebates have a 50% 'deny first' business model (or 'business scam).
To be clear, my conspiracy theory is that these scam rebate companies deny about 50% of the claims, and likely about 50% of those denied 'just give up'... mainly because they don't have the luxury of spending the time/effort that's required to fight these idiots!

ETA: Store won't honor it, says online and in store are two different retailers basically.
To be honest, for a $1000 gift card, I would still order it online and get it shipped and pay $80-$120 for a uhual truck to return back in the warehouse. The cart crew guys will help you unload it onto a flatbed. Still gaining $800+.
Don't feel bad thinking you are misusing the returns policy or whatever because employees and managers do it all the time. I personally order a mattress online so it can be ship to my house and haul my old one out for free and then order the exact same mattress in store a day later and return it to recoup the $120 in shipping price that was including online. Most product online cost more than in store because of the shipping is added into the price.
The only time costco really track your returns is if you always buying it and returning it broken or unsaleable without justification.
