I own a subway, and there's no way we can accept this on a continuous basis. We actually lose money whenever we honor such coupons (forget about not taking a profit, we often have to put our own money). Just like everything else, our food cost went up a lot, we're paying more in rent if lease is due, we can't hire and retain anyone unless we're paying at least $3 above the minimum ($15/hr minimum), etc.

This is not just me. Any subway owner I have spoken to is fed up with Subway HQ and their poor marketing. It's okay to have $1-3 coupons but not BOGO or $8 for a meal that would cost $14 minimum.

At the end of the day, we invest $300k to make money. This isn't helping us and it certainly doesn't help customers hoping to use such coupons. Also, whenever there's such coupons, we get a huge influx of new customers, but as soon as we stop accepting them, almost all of them go away (this statement is based on hard data from my store).

I once went to a subway when meatball sandwiches were $2 for a 6"... got a foot long and they wanted to charge me $7... they said if have to order it as 2 x 6" if I wanted the $2 price.. so I said well keep the sandwich since it was already made.. the ower rolled her eyes and said give it to him..

Done with Subway in Chicago. The vast majority take NO online coupons whatsoever, including the stupid ones like 10% off. If I am paying almost 11 bucks for a sub, I will go up the street to the Potbelly's and enjoy a FAR superior product.

That said thanks for sharing and repped! Smilie

Why do you accept coupons if it's causing a loss? Lot of subways around me don't accept.

May I ask you which sub is your least profitable?
Cold cut and meatball are often cheapest, so we make the least amount.

Chicken and other sandwiches are expensive, but if we have to give away the second sandwich for free then it would be cold cut or meatball. This is what many stores nearby are doing. I'm currently honoring all coupons, but I'm likely to copy this to align with all other subways nearby.

Our local DA (they usually look over all subways in their assigned area) is forcing us. Since many Subways are owned by mom & pop (often owners work there full time or part time), HQ can't force use to honor such coupons, but if we want to buy a second Subway or need something from the DAs then we gotta place nice with them.

There has to be a reason why corporate is insisting on offering these promotions. They are trying to get people into your shops. If you're doing fine without them then yes I can see the reason for not accepting them. Poor trafficked stores need the boost even if this will hurt their bottom line. Something has to be done to get customers in a returning. I don't go to subways anymore because of the higher costs. The 1-3 dollar off coupons are okay. The 3 dollars off will get me in there. I don't think there is a good solution. Labor costs, material(food) costs make it cost prohibitive for owners and consumers

Yeah, completely agree with you. It just that it doesn't create a pleasant experience for the customers. There's no alignment between subway owners and there's no high-level enforcement either. This is as if corporate didn't get the buy-in from the majority of owners before pushing out such marketing.

One thing would be that when a customer uses a coupon on a product from your store they may order the 3$ fountain drink or cookies, 2$ bag of 50 cent chips, bottled drinks. The up sells are what bring a lot of profit.

I don't know how coupons work, but I think HQ will compensate coupon use loss?

What mom & pop has $300k to blow on a Subway franchise? Hard to feel bad that for people that can afford that kind of money to burn. Also if a Subway can't afford to pay it's workers enough to at least live in the same town they operate it won't survive long.
They may take out a loan to cover some of the $300k.
