I thought the same until we found many little bugs crawling around in our expired rice last year
There are eggs in your rice. The slower you eat the rice, the more the eggs hatch and populate (and then lay and hatch more eggs). You can absolutely find handfuls of bugs in old, oversized bags of rice.

If you're going to buy 15 lbs of rice, do yourself a favor and FREEZE THE ENTIRE BAG OF RICE FOR 7 DAYS. Once you do that you kill all the eggs.

You can then proceed to leave the rice outside of the freezer, while also being sure to seal it from air and insects between uses. I recommend a gamma container.

There are always bugs and eggs in your rice. Washing your rice increases your chances of being able to remove them, but does not guarantee. If you want to find out if you have any bugs or eggs in your rice, just steep it in water before using it. The bugs float.

All the above also applies to flour and other ground grains.

The more aged the basmati rice, the better it is.
They might be thinking of planting them! One never knows...

Right… but I used to purchase the 15$ variety OP posted from Costco (20lb bag) , but that's always never aged. Not sure if they get the actual year on pkg though
Good rice is usally aged for about a year. It is somewhat more expensive. Costco Royal bags also say premium aged on them.

I've read that freezing isn't sufficient to kill rice weevil eggs, although it could suppress them indefinitely, if you have space in your freezer.

What I did was use oxygen absorbers in sealed half gallon mason jars. With the oxygen gone, they should never hatch. Once you open a half gallon and expose it to oxygen again, eating the 3-4 lbs of rice that is in there should not take very long.

And just like @StargateAtlantis implies, you will eat buggy rice if the going gets tough in the Pegasus Galaxy.

Great price but this brand is just not as aromatic as the Kirkland brand. Organic Royal 20lb normally sells for $25.50 and non-organic sells for $18 at Costco.

Poly bag as non-resealable inner plastic bag inside (can seal with chip-clip or similar).
