If you're caulking anyways, the difference of hole is minimal and will be covered up regardless.
If you're using a soft wood and nailing to drywall or shallow into wood, don't waste your time with an 18ga.
16ga can do everything a 18ga can, an 18ga cannot do everything a 16ga can. (apart from slightly smaller holes and a smaller machine)

Spent several years as a finished carpenter. Never nailed baseboards with a 16gauge gun. Also shooting 9/16-3/4" trim into drywall (1/2"). The math works for 2" 18ga nails. If you're having holding problems you're missing the studs and/or bottom plate. Anyone can shoot a nail gun, takes some experience to know where to hit wood.
