I've been using Homes and Minis for years. I haven't added one recently, but all my Groups still work. Likewise, the ones I've paired so that they operate in stereo (Google Home 1 as left speaker, Google Home 2 as right speaker) also still work. I believe the result of the lawsuit was they had to change the way you adjusted the volume on them. Prior to the lawsuit, I could adjust the volume of all groups and plus pairs in groups at once. After the lawsuit, you have to adjust the volume of each Google Home or Pair. So long story short, it's a little annoying and user experience has decreased a little, but they're still a pretty good option.
And I feel bad for the people who feel this strongly towards others for something that literally has no effect on them. Congrats on your opinion!

I will be enjoying my speakers in my wonderful patio in the meantime *in stereo*
To help clear up some confusion, there is a difference between Group and Pair in Google home. When you take two of these and pair them as stereo, it will create one Pair. That means when you adjust the volume, it will do so on both. Then there is a group where you can add individual devices as well as a pair. With the sonus lawsuit, to change the volume of group, you will need to do so for each indivual device or pair. Remember, a pair is one entity so it will adjust the volume of the 2 devices in the pair. I have a kitchen Group that has a Google hub and a Nest audio Pair (2 of these audio setup as stereo pair). I can play music on the group or on the hub or on the pair, default is the group. Hope that helps clarify better.

Let's be real: it has become extremely annoying and the entire appeal of these Nest speaker groups is no longer there. Huge letdown from Google

I've managed to do something similar with a custom routine.

I use the starter: "turn up the volume"

Then the custom action: "turn up home mini 1 by 10%" Then the custom action: "turn up home mini 2 by 10%" And so on...

If you have volume settings you like to begin with then this command just increases them but keeps the relative differences there. I have another one for "turn down the volume" and they all decrease by 10%.

So far, so good.

Basic question: do these come in two boxes? I need two for separate gifts.

Yes, the pair comes in 2 individual boxes, 1 speaker in each box. I got them the day after ordering them, but I'm not that far from Adorama.

I few years ago I had a google mini in almost every room and one google home in the kitchen. Whenever I would try to play music on more than one they would crash and restart. Is that still an issue? My google home also just stopped making any sound one day, never worked again. I really want to try again as I have the google nest mesh network and want to keep everything the same brand.
