When I follow the link the OP supplied for the rebate form from pennzoil, it has amazon.com listed as a vendor in the pull down menu.

Sucks this is only for 5w-20.

I bought my two jugs of 0w-20 from Walmart for around 22 each. Keep tabs on pricing and bite when it drops.
isn't this for any type of oil? the rebate doesn't say only 5w-20 just the 5w-20 is the only one at sub $20

This is a great deal. Since moving and summers are approaching I really need 5w-30, otherwise I'd be all over this.
Huh? Doesn't matter if your summer or winter between 5w-20 and 5w-30. Since there is no different between them in start up weight.

Supposedly it's easier on the engine when cooling down, even if the same viscosity. This what I've been told, but I'm no expert by any means.

The rebate doesn't come from Amazon, bro.
He purchased from Amazon and did the pennzoil rebate but it never went through. If you check other threads, most complaints are about buying from Amazon and rebate not being fulfilled by pennzoil. I purchased from Walmart and have received multiple rebates and other members have as well.

That doesn't make sense, since cool down wouldn't be effected by an oil weight. Warming up yes, but that's the first number.

Correct, rebate is for any type of oil as long as platinum. But this deal is only for 5w-20 unfortunately.

There's still a thickness difference between grades, so if the oil acts too thin, and the engine wasn't designed with the tolerances, it'll act up like my Scion xA did.

Then, you'll simply dump the non-spec oil the same day and replace it with the spec oil like I had to.

Older engines can be more tolerant if you go thicker, but modern engines with sub millimeter tolerances can hate you with anything but spec oil.

Only good way is to check "bob is the oil guy" etc forums and ask if anyone's already tried different weight oils, otherwise, it'll be a weekend experiment on your engine...

Gotcha. Thanks for sharing. I have an older Mazda 3 and I know various forums will swear by 5W-20 and 5W-30. It's lead me to believe it's a climate thing. I believe the owner manual in different countries it will reference both as well.

Just remember that climate only really has to do with the "winter" weight as in the first number. The second number is the running weight and that doesn't matter much about climate since your engine runs in the 199-200F range. It doesn't care if it's -30 out or +110 out since your oil will be at 190-200f.

For those looking for 5W-30, Platinum (non-Ultra) [amazon.com] 5-quart is $23.97 but has 5%/15% S&S discount (1-4 item and 5+ items): $22.77 and $20.37. Ultra Platinum [amazon.com] and Platinum High Mileage 5W-30 are $24.97 and $24.98 but only has 5% S&S for 5+ items, $23.72 after discount. Still slightly better than HD/Walmart which are same price but don't have S&S discount.

hi all,
for the best bang for the buck comparison isn't Mobil 1 0w-20 with that 20k protection better than this? i don't mean to compare apple to orange but Pennzoil 0w-20 ultra platinum only covers 5K-7k miles per oil change compared to Mobil 1 extended isn't it? I normally change the oil every 15k with the extended filter from Mobil 1, it's less hassle in terms of processing the rebates and less frequency on the oil change. correct me if I'm wrong.
