I don't own this set, but have owned several of the other variations of the battery powered sets( polar express, Mickey, Harry Potter). I like them and haven't had any issues.

Is that sarcasm? Lionel is the brand for model/toy trains.

Lionel has been around forever. The track in this set is 100% plastic. Certainly not as nice as the metal tracks, but for $37 this is a good deal. I have the polar express set and my one complaint is how noisy it is. Not sure if this construction skin has the same problem.
They have been around for almost as long as trains …
By noisy do you mean the mechanism or the recorded sounds? I have the polar express set and found the sound effects to be too loud. Found a tutorial on instructables how to add a rheostat to adjust the volume. I put mine in the smoke stack and now I can go from full volume(never) to mute. Somewhere in between is preference for my sanity.
I've done the same thing w/some of my kids toys. They can be SO loud! I swear toy companies think kids can't hear well!!

I've resorted to opening up such toys, locating the speaker and just sticking some packing tape on them. It's worked on Thomas trains, leapfrog toys, make-believe laptops, etc. Found that much easier compared to fiddling with the circuitry.
Yes, well known in the US, but mostly known for lower quality items. It's not like Märklin or something but of course you get what you pay for. This is cheap so also likely low quality
