My theory is the whole "they're being discontinued grab them now" was just a big marketing ploy

These "sales" have been on slickdeals for many years now. They're good headphones but nobody is paying $890 for them
It would greatly benefit the community if you can give examples of your bunch of headphones that may be as good. Thanks.
I have owned these. I have since climbed the ladder to the Utopias. These are awesome detailed headphones. I highly recommend at this price. Pair these with a good DAC like the Fio or similar and you will be a very happy listener.

Yup, just like on the focal clear. Have been on clearance for almost a year if not more than a year already

I have the 6xx (along w/the 177x) and this is my experience w/the Elegias as well. I'm using the THX 789 amp. As far as soundstage & bass the Elegias are superior. The 6xx is a mid-range monster though.

I realize I have far too many headphones.

Three headphones is to many? I wish I only had three :/

Trust me I was just getting started! Smilie

I have an original pair of HD580 Precisions upgraded with new drivers, ear pads, head pads even cup holder/hinge. I think the harness & cups are the only original parts left.

You're comparing to Sennheiser which is half the price. In the same price class is the Hifiman Sundara, and most anecdotal reviewers prefer it over the Focal. I own the Sundara and it was, for me, a big step up from Sennheiser 5xx/6xx. Of course, your ears may vary.

I worked at radio stations for years. My $30 Koss gave me fantastic fidelity. I can't imagine paying this price.

If you're talking about the porta pro, I'd have to agree. It's crazy that a headphone from the 80s STILL sounds great compared to competition.

DT1770 is a Beyerdynamic headphone, not Sennheiser. Do you mean the Massdrop x Beyerdynamic DT 177X GO? I've been curious about those, how has your experience been with them?
I own the 177X GOs and love them. I prefer them over the Sennheiser HD600s and Hifiman Sundaras (although that's not the best comparison since the Sundara is an open back headphone).

I know Beyers have a reputation for being a bit tiring for long listening due to their strong trebles, but I haven't felt that with the 177X. Reviews suggested that the treble had been brought down a bit for this model, but I haven't used other Beyers for extended periods to compare.

The price just keeps dropping. I bought it at 399. It really isn't that good. It's uncomfortable, the wire is ridiculously short and stiff, and the sound quality is no better than my old Beyer DT770. If anything, I prefer the SQ of DT770 over this.

I have a cheaper pair of Ultrasone headphones. While relatively durable they are really uncomfortable if you wear them for long periods of time. These Focal headphones look pretty solid but personally for me I'd rather have something like the DT770 instead.

Those 30 dollar kos headphones would be 100+ with inflation today. Are those spectacular Kos headphones worth $105 dollars? Also, how far did you walk up hill in the snow to get to your radio station?

Having listened to both, how do these compare to the Utopias? I know the price difference is huge, but would you say the sound experience is worth the price? How would you describe the nuances?

While we're at it, anyone ever compare these first hand against the Hifiman XS? My impression from online reviews for both the XS and the Elegias is that they both provide decent bass with impressive sound stage (even though it's planar vs closed back).

TIA.

I don't have the DT1990s but they are open headphones while the Elegias are closed. I have the DT177X a similar closed version for Drop.com.

To my ears my Elegias have a greater soundstage & slightly more expansive bass while the 177Xs are relatively clinical/drier but more immediate sounding I think.

I like them both since they have complimentary strengths/weaknesses. YMMV of course.
