I bought this for work and I have had to go in twice to replace the ratchet. The directional selector gets stuck and ends up popping out. Probably ok for lite use at home. Or if you don't mind going into Ace to have it replaced.

Total crap though. I wouldn't waste my time or money on that set.

I buy a couple of these every time they go on sale. They are gr8 for gifts and for replacing lost or damaged sockets in bigger tool boxes. The ratchets are decent, but they don't last. And good luck finding replacements for warranty. My local Lowes haven't had any in stock for the last dozen or so times I've went in.

There are lots of things that have bolts that aren't cars.

I believe the "light use at home" he's referring to is stuff like taking the service panels off a washing machine, tightening the legs on a chair/table, etc....you know, things that aren't torqued down to 120 ft-lbs like rusted auto parts.

If the ratchet fails while you're snugging down a bolt on your dishwasher, that's just inconvenient. If the ratchet fails while you're reefing like hell on your little 1/4" 10mm socket on an alternator bracket, your delicate hand meat and knuckles are flying into something sharp, hard or both.

I know it's not a real repair job until you've drew blood and screamed out expletives, but there really is such a thing as "the right tool for the job."
This ratchet set should last most people a lifetime of heavy mechanical use. It's as well made as the vast majority of ratchets on the market today and better made than some older USA made ratchets own..

Yeah I get what it "should" do but there's two people within the first 7 comments on this thread commenting on how the ratchet doesn't last. Look back on similar deals for this set and you'll see similar complaints about the ratchet. Since the sockets are useless without the ratchet, it's pretty important that the ratchet actually work.

I don't have any experience with this set at all, I was simply replying to you asking what light work was. Now you're claiming that this $10 set is somehow "as well made as the vast majority of ratchets on the market today" which seems hardly true given the amount of comments on how often the ratchet breaks.

You have to take some peoples claims with a grain of salt. Some people just like to stir the pot. And yes, I'm claiming exactly that. I own this exact ratchet and about a dozen or so others. All the newer ones are about the same quality. My Dewalt 1/2" ratchet is shinier, factory buffed to impress... but it's only about two years old and already has some rust on it and three or four of the sockets are all rusted on the inside. My wife bought the set for me, but tit was a lot more than $10.00. The world has changed a lot. It's extremely hard to convince some people that when it comes to tools (and most things) price rarely correlate with quality or performance. Here's a perfect example. The sub $20 Harbor Freight 1/2"breaker bar outperformed the $150 Snap on, the $140 Matco and the $120 MAC breaker bars.

Out performed? LOL, he just just pushed harder on the Pittsburg. What a stupid test that showed practically nothing.

The problem with HF tools is reliability. He apparently got a good one that didn't self destruct at the pivot, would the rest of us be so lucky at 200ft-lbs, 300 ft-lbs, 400 ft-lbs...?

Is this usable for tightening the axle nut for 26" inch bicycle?
yes, will be fine for that. 15mm, I believe, is what you will need.

Can't rebuild the ratchet? I have a USA made Craftsman ratchet set and I would try to fix first before trade. Or even sell it on eBay.
Yes, definitely keep the Craftsman USA. Don't warranty swap for Craftsman China.

If you can find a Sears near you (not likely), the standard policy on ratchet warranties is to do an immediate in-store rebuild for you. They're supposed to have a rebuild kit for each ratchet, and will take the 2 minutes it takes to swap in the new mechanism.

If they don't have the kit, they may offer to let you take a replacement from their rack of random used ratchet drives. Or they may offer to order the kit and then you'd need to make a follow-up trip to the store to pick up.

^^^ These are all based on seeing it happen for someone else while I was waiting in line at Sears.

Lowes will do warranty exchanges for you, but it will be with a new, China made ratchet. Only good if you are trading in an older China made ratchet.

A broken Craftsman USA ratchet is worth more than a brand new Craftsman China one.

I would avoid Ace at all cost. The last two times buying at Ace was a horrible experience. Each Ace store is owned and managed individually, so it is totally up to the owner decide how they want to run it.
My local Ace, I bought a plant, which apparently had not been watered in a few days, brought it home, watered it and still died in one day. Went back to store and got a song and dance about....not watering it? Pffft...Store is always empty I guess they get crabby about refunds

Even in the specifications they don't list with which sizes it comes with.

I'd rather buy the Harbor Freight one for 6 bucks that has 2x more sockets.
Honestly Craftsman's craftmanship is awful, worse than Harbor Freight quality

When we say Harbor Freight, we really mainly talking about the cheapest HF brands "Pittsburgh" and "Pittsburgh Pro". What a majority of people don't realize is that these factories use identical machinery etc and sometimes even come out of the same factory as the name brand. I can tell by the looks of this set the actual ratchet is much better than the one from HF ... but the HF has way more sockets in the set and is almost half price (and has been this price for a while).

If you don't think these premium brands are rip off ... compare the more expensive ratchets with grips and or breaker bars in price to the ones from Pittsburgh Pro.

So you buy a dying plant and blame it on Ace? lol. I mean, come on. I mean yeah, it might be their fault if it wasn't watered (but some plants die regardless so who knows), but why would you buy it to begin with?
