I want to selfishly say at this point just get a Quest 2 and buy re4 for that. I've played through re4 countless times on multiple consoles and playing it in VR was still an entirely new experience...imagine having the first time with it in VR 🤯

Easily the best version of it. Second best version is the Wii remake because of the IR aiming, which makes it ridiculous the Switch version has no motion controls. Not even touch for the menus 🤷 🤦

From this list, the first is really good, 4 is a fan favorite. Both play very differently. Five and six are probably not the best starting point as they were … eh.

REmake (first one) and RE4 are great as others have already mentioned but if you have an Xbox One/Series or a PlayStation 4/5 then I highly recommend RE2.

It was good when I was like 10 years old. If I want a bit of nostalgia, I'd play it again. If you're totally new to the story, I don't think it'd be as immersive for our "adult" minds lol.

For me personally, 4 and 5 is where I really got into the series. The original games 0, 1, 2, 3) are cool but they are a product of their time and use tank controls and awkward camera angles. 4 is when RE went to a third person perspective, until they went first person in 7 and 8.

And yeah, the modern remakes of 2 and 3 on Xbox and ps5 are awesome.

The remake of the first, 0 and 4 are all fantastic games. The tank controls of the first two can be off putting but really add to the experience. As others have mentioned, 4 is a 3rd person over the shoulder which is a little held back by the aiming but it a fantastic game. 5 is borderline blah having to rely in terrible ai for the side character. I'd honestly skip 6 altogether.

The Wii version was definitive in my opinion. Haven't played vr

Resident Evil 0 is pretty sweet too. Definitely worth $10. However, 5/6 was pretty bad.

Looks like most or all of these are cheaper on the PlayStation store, if you have both consoles.
