These are not designed to track people.
Just be warned if you buy them to track people, or stolen stuff for that matter, you may be disappointed later.
The functions and rule sets are constantly changing.
Example: these now beep/chime a lot sooner than their original release. They also notify Apple devices a lot sooner. A message appears saying an airtag has been noticed to be moving with you.
Why does that matter? Your kids may stop carrying them if they chime a lot. Your kids friends may have phones or tablets that get that notification and worry them.
Do what you want but be aware that you're using them against their design and shouldn't be encouraging tracking people with these.
I put a chain on this & placed it on my kids so I can track them. They are 14 & 16 yr old & do not have a phone yet.
I was thinking of getting one of these for this purpose. I have a 8 year old we are trying to give her some small responsibilities/freedom. We want to let her walk to and from school herself (5 blocks /residential neighborhood), but would like to track to make sure she arrived to school okay and on her way home after school.
Do you think air tag is good for this purpose?

It might work but here are some issues to watch out for/be aware of
- those only ping if they are close to an iphone. So if your kid is walking home and there is no one with an iphone near them then you are still not going to know where they are until they show up. Also if they for any reason drift off their normal path and wherever they went there is no one with an iphone then you won't be able to track them.
- the thing will start to beep after a while of being near an iphone that it is not registered to. They do this so you don't use it to stalk someone. This is not an issue in your case since your kid doesn't have a phone and even if they walk Seth friends who do it won't be long enough to trigger it.
- there is no way for your kid to contact you or emergency services in case of emergency
- (not sure if this is true so you might want to confirm) there is an app that people can use to check if there is an airtag nearby. It would tell them there is one and they can also make it beep to find it. So an adult with an iphone can find the airtag with your kid.
To everyone else you can actually take the airtag apart and disable the speaker if you have a need for it to not beep.

I bought a 4-pack earlier and it's great for tracking keys, luggage, backpacks.
As others have pointed out, not so great for tracking kids.
One idea that parents are using to verify that their kids get to school safely is to get them an Apple Watch w/ cellular. Much less distracting than a phone at school, but still has Find My tracking capability. Also has emergency calling functions. And options to silence notifications while in class.
Refurb Apple Watch Series 5 w/ Cellular are like $180 now and would be a better device to send with elementary and middle school kids until they get their own phone.

Agree that based on the recent rule changes, using these to recover stolen items appears to be very unlikely. A thief will learn relatively quickly that they're being tracked. It's unfortunate that these crazy stalkers ruined a good thing for everyone else. At best, you be able to find out an item has left your proximity quickly.
If you are trying to track your children, download and setup the family apps through your cell provider (ATT Secure Family , Tmobile Family Where etc....

I find them not that useful as they are dependent on near by iPhones so it is hard to say you are getting instant location information, it might be old information. Also if there are no IPhones near by to transmit your airtag location then you won't get any information. You also get annoying alerts airtag left behind all time. Like Apple says it is for lost keys or cars but not for tracking.
