I have the $300 per year plan with 8GB data and I've been on the phone with customer service. They wont change my data to 16GB. I was on the phone with them 35min to argue. I asked for a supervisor and they hung up. I'm not giving up though.

I was just successfully able to go from the 8GB annual plan to this 16GB annual plan on my line that was up for renewal in two days. Thanks so much to perfchris and others on here for details on how to make this work.

Unlike most others I decided to use Tracfone as my intermediary port so figured I'd lay out what I did.

Went to Dollar General and bought a $1 Tracfone (Verizon) SIM and activated online on their $15 one month plan porting my current AT&T prepaid number. I did have to call AT&T to get the account number for porting. I was told that there was no PIN needed to port and to use 000000, however I read elsewhere that may not be the case so I used my AT&T account security PIN in the field for PIN and it worked so YMMV on that part.

I ordered the new AT&T plan/SIM online using a $40 Visa gift card I already had. SIM arrived next day. I put it in an unlocked phone and it activated immediately with a new (temporary) AT&T number, but didn't actually have service because I still had the $300 balance to be paid on the account. Went online and bought the AT&T prepaid cards via Target and used them to fund the account. NOTE it would only let me order 4 $50 cards the next I tried was "canceled" due to customer limits it said, so I ordered one $100 card. So $275 total to activate the plan, no taxes when using the prepaid cards.

With both accounts active and working I called AT&T port activations to transfer my regular number back from Tracfone to AT&T. I was literally on the phone about 10 minutes and it all went so smoothly. VERY different experience than my last attempt at getting this plan.

One additional thing to mention for someone to try, that I forgot to look into until after I had already ordered the new SIM, is there is some decent cashback potential from a couple of the popular cashback sites. I am not certain that it will work but potential to get $40 to $75 cashback if it qualifies as a "new" account for CB purposes as well, I assume it should.
Tried follow these steps this week and this did not work for me at all, there is no way to add the gift cards after you get the $300 sim card. Currently have no service on both my sim cards, please help...

Did you order the SIM/plan direct from the AT&T site, if so what form of payment did you use at that time. Did you ask for a new number or try to port a number?

I tried to port 🤦🏿, so what are my options now? Do I need to repurchase a new $300 plan with a new number? Basically I'm not going to have phone service for almost a week if I do that.

I used a card with a low balance on it, but I've used att prepaid about a year ago if that information helps any. When I called support they told me this was only eligible for NEW numbers not ports. And that basically I needed to buy the plan again as a new number. And my phone has been cut off from my previous provider since att tried to port my number last night. I'm in a big pickle here...

So at this point have you only been charge $1 for the SIM card? Who did you try to Port From? Do you now have an active number/account with a new AT&T phone number that is just waiting for you to fund the $300? Is it essential that you retain your previous number?

Yes only $1 has been charged. Port was from Tracfone/Verizon. I don't have a number with AT&T, nit even a new one. Yes, I need my old number for my business that I've had for 15 years...

if you call port with this transaction they will NOT be able to get you the promo

I recommend you order another sim and click new number

I hope you have not activated service by putting sim in your phone

do you have service?

When you order a sim from AT&T it shows the $1 sim and $300 as what you'll get charged. Is this not the case and will actually only charge $1, and then $300 later when you put the SIM in for the first time? Basically want to know if I need to have a prepaid visa with less than $301 or if any credit card will be fine.

I put the new att sim card in and tried to activate my service but obviously since the funds were not available the service did not work. I have no service with ATT but I was able to reactivate my old Tracfone sim card for the time being and I was able to port my number back. So if I purchase another sim card with a payment method that does not have $300 on it, if I choose new number will I be able to pay with my att prepaid gift cards that I purchased from Target?

You should be able to. Though with the multiple port attempts who knows if something might be messed up somehow, when CS Reps start trying different things that they may be unsure of. If the number you want to keep is now again currently active with Tracfone (VERIZON) it should work. Did you input the number on the ATT site to see if it says it is eligible to port right now? I literally xfered my number from AT&T prepaid to Tracfone Verizon for one day and then back to AT&T prepaid, probably could have done it same day.

That is what I would do, purchase a new Sim card and say you want a new number. When you get that SIM put it in the phone and let it activate with the new number/create the new account. It should then show a balance due of $300 if you used a card with a balance less than $300 to buy the SIM and there should be an option to pay with prepaid cards. One thing I was unsure on when I was doing it and maybe perfchris can answer is it possible to try to port the phone number from Tracfone to the AT&T account BEFORE you fund that $300 to make sure it works before your out the money for the plan.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank lilballercp3

After spending nearly 4 hours on the phone speaking with AT&T, I was finally able to activate my service with a new telephone number for the $300 8GB + 8GB bonus annual upfront plan. After that, I was able to port my number over and keep my existing telephone number. Here are a few key takeaways from my experience. I hope my headache can help someone else on here avoid the mistakes I made. First off, when you have the plan in your cart, you're only charged .99 cent upfront. Make sure to use a cc or debit card with less than $300 on it that will cover the cost of the sim card only. Also, DO NOT CHOOSE TO PORT YOUR NUMBER. You can bring your number over AFTER you're given your new AT&T number. Once your sim card arrives, put the sim card in your phone and keep the sim holder (it's blue and looks like a credit card with the AT&T logo on it, it's what you receive in the mail that contains your new AT&T prepaid sim card) near you handy because that has your ICCID number (which you are going to need). This next step is the key to everything. Put your phone in airplane mode; get a free google voice number if you don't already have one with the google voice app and enable wifi calling on your phone. In the settings of the google voice app, make sure you change your preferred calling preference to wifi calling. Now call 1-866-975-0050 with your google voice number on wifi with your AT&T prepaid sim card in your phone, and you definitely wanna have at least 2 hours of free time to complete everything especially if you hit a snag like I did. If the reps ask you if you are using the phone you want to activate, tell them no. This way, they won't tell you to call back with another device to complete your phone activation.

Go ahead and complete the process, and when it comes time to pay the $300, tell the rep that you have AT&T prepaid cards and that you would like to use those (this step is only needed if you are paying with AT&T prepaid cards to avoid tax, hopefully you purchased your AT&T prepaid gift cards for less than the face amount if you're a real slick dealer 😁). DO NOT TELL THEM THIS INFORMATION IN ADVANCE. Also do not tell activations that you plan on porting your number out( (a couple of reps told me this promotion was for new numbers ONLY, no point in stirring the pot just yet just let it simmer) After you have your new phone number and have successfully created your new AT&T prepaid account and created your new 4 digit pin, now it's time to call AT&T port activation at 1-888-898-7685 still using wifi calling with your google voice number. Be sure your account setup is complete before calling the port department because they are going to ask you to complete that process first and verify your account with your pin. Once you complete your port process, you're all set. Just keep in mind also that if you happen to mess up like I did and tried to port your number in the very beginning at checkout, you can always tell the activation rep that you changed your mind now and would like to get a new AT&T prepaid number since technically that's the only way to get this deal in the first place. I hope my steps are easy to follow and can help someone. Remember to use wifi calling with call account activations and port activation, and have the credit card shaped AT&T sim card holder, and be able to locate your phones imei number.

Target $5 off 50 = -$30 (for 6 cards $300 plan)
Just to confirm there is no problem applying 6 of those $50 prepaid cards to complete this transaction, right?
