I have the $300 per year plan with 8GB data and I've been on the phone with customer service. They wont change my data to 16GB. I was on the phone with them 35min to argue. I asked for a supervisor and they hung up. I'm not giving up though.

After spending nearly 4 hours on the phone speaking with AT&T, I was finally able to activate my service with a new telephone number for the $300 8GB + 8GB bonus annual upfront plan. After that, I was able to port my number over and keep my existing telephone number. Here are a few key takeaways from my experience. I hope my headache can help someone else on here avoid the mistakes I made. First off, when you have the plan in your cart, you're only charged .99 cent upfront. Make sure to use a cc or debit card with less than $300 on it that will cover the cost of the sim card only. Also, DO NOT CHOOSE TO PORT YOUR NUMBER. You can bring your number over AFTER you're given your new AT&T number. Once your sim card arrives, put the sim card in your phone and keep the sim holder (it's blue and looks like a credit card with the AT&T logo on it, it's what you receive in the mail that contains your new AT&T prepaid sim card) near you handy because that has your ICCID number (which you are going to need). This next step is the key to everything. Put your phone in airplane mode; get a free google voice number if you don't already have one with the google voice app and enable wifi calling on your phone. In the settings of the google voice app, make sure you change your preferred calling preference to wifi calling. Now call 1-866-975-0050 with your google voice number on wifi with your AT&T prepaid sim card in your phone, and you definitely wanna have at least 2 hours of free time to complete everything especially if you hit a snag like I did. If the reps ask you if you are using the phone you want to activate, tell them no. This way, they won't tell you to call back with another device to complete your phone activation.

Go ahead and complete the process, and when it comes time to pay the $300, tell the rep that you have AT&T prepaid cards and that you would like to use those (this step is only needed if you are paying with AT&T prepaid cards to avoid tax, hopefully you purchased your AT&T prepaid gift cards for less than the face amount if you're a real slick dealer 😁). DO NOT TELL THEM THIS INFORMATION IN ADVANCE. Also do not tell activations that you plan on porting your number out( (a couple of reps told me this promotion was for new numbers ONLY, no point in stirring the pot just yet just let it simmer) After you have your new phone number and have successfully created your new AT&T prepaid account and created your new 4 digit pin, now it's time to call AT&T port activation at 1-888-898-7685 still using wifi calling with your google voice number. Be sure your account setup is complete before calling the port department because they are going to ask you to complete that process first and verify your account with your pin. Once you complete your port process, you're all set. Just keep in mind also that if you happen to mess up like I did and tried to port your number in the very beginning at checkout, you can always tell the activation rep that you changed your mind now and would like to get a new AT&T prepaid number since technically that's the only way to get this deal in the first place. I hope my steps are easy to follow and can help someone. Remember to use wifi calling with call account activations and port activation, and have the credit card shaped AT&T sim card holder, and be able to locate your phones imei number.
And how many time others and myself have mentioned that over that last 50 pages of this thread?

Do NOT tick off the box that you are bringing your old number!

Just to confirm there is no problem applying 6 of those $50 prepaid cards to complete this transaction, right?
You can certainly apply 6 $50 cards, however Target would not allow me to buy 6 of the $50 cards, after 4 my 5th order was canceled saying I had reached the limit, I had to buy 4 $50 cards and 1 $100. YMMV

Glad you finally got it figured out, sometimes it takes some work to get a deal. As perfchris said though if you start by getting a NEW number it goes (or should go) so much smoother. My experience was night and day between my two attempts.
Just want to point out to others that the whole Google Voice step is not necessary if you have the ability to just call AT&T port activations on another phone.

Why do you need to call rep using google voice over Wi-Fi?

I believe this must have been OP's only way to call them. You just need to call the rep on a number other than the one your trying to port/activate. I still have a landline phone at home and called on that.

Yes, the Google voice method is ONLY needed if you don't have any other means of contacting AT&T to activate the line and or port your number over. The other members of my family were not home, and I do not have a landline. So, that's just a workaround IF you need it. If you have access to another working phone use that instead. Obviously there is a slightly lesser chance of you being disconnected during your call if you're using a dedicated line(luckily I live in an area with really great internet service). But thank you firedog79, you were definitely the most helpful here (honorable mention to perfchris for the support as well). I just had to figure it out, glad I didn't have to order a new sim card like we thought initially 🙂.

True, but I'm glad I made the mistake for the experience. At least we now know that if you screw up in epic proportions like I did there still is a work around. Also nobody posted a guide explaining what to do if you have no phone service and don't have access to another phone to reach out to AT&T. Hopefully my experience will help another here that needs that information.

FYI , I followed the route of getting temporary number and then porting to new number for my S22 phone and using ESIM .
learnt the hard way that once i ported to the new number , esim did not work and had to go to the store to active a new card and scan it in. I asked and got an extra sim card just incase i had to move out of esim.
Just another data for anyone thinking of using esim.

D'oh, I just bought the $300/16GB plan and chose esim for my S22 Ultra. Should I try to call and port my number before adding the esim to my phone, or will I have to visit a store regardless once the port is complete?

you can try porting first before scanning the esim card they send. Probably that will work.

Problem with mine was, After porting the number esim in my phone still showed old number. So i went ahead and removed the esim data (in settings) and tried to scan the qr code again but that failed as its one time use and errored out stating already used. After dealing with support for an hour, they said to go to ATT store to get new esim QR.

Does anyone know how long Target blocks someone in the household from buying additional AT&T gift cards once you hit whatever their limit is for fraud protection?

I dont know but I waited and tried the next day and it still didn't let me, so I just bought a $100 one. 4x50 and 1x100. At the moment the Kroger deal is better (unless you also have Redcard then its about the same)

I'm STILL trying to get my 16 instead of 8. Took a 5 day break from the hassle to go to Boston and a Sox game then back at it today on the phone with them. Was once again initially told that port ins are Not eligible for the 16GB promo, I argued again that was absolutely not the case and asked them to quote me where it says that, eventually the CS agent again agreed with me that port ins are eligible and then said something about the problem probably was that they had to create a temporary number for activation blah blah blah. I'm now awaiting another call back from a supervisor. I'll try floating the "add-on" data as a solution to the problem although a little concerned it wont continue month to month or not renew at the end of the year like the 16GB promo will.
Any update on this?
