Can anyone comment on whether or not deep sockets are needed frequently when working on cars? Just started doing my own car maintenance (all Japanese cars for now) and I haven't run into needing a deep socket except 1 time to get the nut off the strut mounts.

Debating between this deal or the other gearwrench set with sae/metric and deep/shallow sockets for $65. I'd need to get a 1/2 to 3/8 step down adapter for that set though

You can mostly get by with just 3/8" and shallow 1/2" for larger sizes. I mostly use a deep 1/2" 19mm or 21mm for lug nuts. On the rare occasion I'm working on bigger stuff underneath the car I'm using impact rated 1/2" that might be deeps.

If you're just getting one set, I'd start with deeps. Especially for impacts.

Ok thanks for the advice.I decided to just wait on a deep impact deal.This seemed like a good deal but then I also read that these universals decrease max torque. So I'll just get a set of deeps and then 1 universal adapter
