I'd bet most on the market today are the upgraded models. Mine has the new charcoal grate and I see no warping or deterioration in the chimney like previous models. I guess only time will tell on how long they last. One thing I know for sure is I could not go back to using a offset or my WSM again after having the 1050.
Thanks for the reply!

I also have a WSM and I've never had a problem with it. Is the end product better with this or is it more an ease of use thing? I am definitely interested in the set and forget/less fuel monitoring aspect while still using charcoal and wood chunks, just wondering if you're also getting better quality food out of it.

I would say I'm happier with my cooks on the 1050. Aside from set and forget I can control the amount of smoke easier with much more constant results. Now I'm no slouch on my wsm or my old offset and only messed up a couple cooks over the last 30yrs but this thing was a game changer for me.

I have the 800 and came from a WSM, and it's definitely easier to smoke on the 800 than the WSM, and I find the WSM pretty dang easy to use. The end results I would say is comparable, I may get more Smokey flavor on the WSM but the 800 is dang good too. The big advantage is smoking something like chicken wings where you can crank the heat up at the end to get them crispy after you've smoked them a few hours.

This uses more charcoal though. The whole hopper on my 800 only gets around 10 hours of smoking (depending on weather), where my 18" wsm could get about 12 hours on about the same amount of charcoal.

I got this for 250$ at HD earlier this year and man it's great. I'm totally new to smoking meat but this made it simple. For those considering I suggest but new probes as the one shipped isn't very accurate.

Not really a note so much on this particular smoker as it is buying a smoker/grill from Amazon:

They set this up as a delivery, and they changed the date/time on me randomly, luckily I was home. Box showed up with a bunch of damage and the smoker is dented in the front, but luckily in a part where it was only cosmetic. Got a huge deal on the one I bought (thanks, Slickdeals!) and the only option Amazon had for me was to return it and rebuy a new one (which doesn't promise me an undamaged smoker) and the price had basically doubled by the time I got it.

Smoker works fine, wasn't worth the hassle of returning it, but if you're really picky about how things look I wouldn't recommend ordering something like this from Amazon.

I got a 560 last year for $150 and especially at that price it's incredible. It would be a bargain at 4x that.

Good:
Awesome smokey flavor you can't get on pellets
Gets properly hot, which most pellet grills will not
Can be modified to run on a USB battery (the spot I wanted to use it in doesn't have power)

Bad:
Build quality is a little cheap
Prone to grease fires if you don't keep it clean
Mine leaks grease out of one corner sometimes
The app is kinda junky. It's fine, it's just not terribly nice to use.

In the meantime, you could use a smoke tube and add charcoal pellets and wood chunks. That's the only method I have keeping me from buying a gravity smoker right now.

I'm a long-time Weber kettle guy but new to these newer smokers. The description on this calls it a "grill and smoker," but am I correct to assume that there is no direct-heat cooking on this? In other words no quick cooks directly over the coals?

Not a deal breaker by any means—just a PSA: this is a charcoal fed grill, which means you will have to get creative about getting wood into it if you smoke. Most people mix chunks in above the burning level of the charcoals so they aren't being directly ignited. Definitely look into it first before buying to smoke.

I run a tube, debating filling it with charcoal pellets to see if I can get just enough flavor.

Same here! Started with a 560, upgraded to a 1050 and gave it to a buddy. We're both happy now. 👍

This really should not be a concern. Just mix layer by layer (like a cake) between charcoal and chunk wood. I've done this on LONG smokes and have to refill the hopper every 4-5 hours or so with no other intervention or maintenance, it's a dream.
