The biggest upgrade you can do to either of these is ditch the bag and put in a proper filter, either Wynn, which has gotten kinda expensive, or a competitor like Donaldson P181038. That will change these from "dust pumps" to decent air filtration. It will also increase flow as the filter has more surface area. Put a chip separate in front of the blower and you have a very good system. A cyclone would be best, followed by a Thien baffle, or at least a bucket separator. So, although the Shop Fox is better, if you want to save money and make a better system, get the HF ($250!) and add a filter ($200-250) and a separator (free-$200).

Can you actually get repair parts for the hf?
That said the HF unit I got was DOA. Took it back. If there were reason to believe they didn't roll off the same Chinese assembly line, maybe I'd pay more for the Shopfox.

That's interesting. I need to see if someone did a side by side comparison.
No, it is not. The Shop Fox has a 12" impeller vs the HF 9 or 10". The Shop Fox will move substantially more air.

Yup. The Shop Fox is actually 2HP, which will trip a normal, 15amp 120V breaker so you have to go 240V. The Harbor Freight claims 2HP but all the reviews I've seen say it pulls less than 15amps so is 1-1.5HP, probably because of the smaller impeller.
Here you go. Although this is a few years old and the model numbers are different. I don't see where the specs are different though.

Edit: This isn't the article I was looking for. Doesn't have the Harbor Freight. My apologies.

Where is the hf in that article?
Edit, just saw your edit lol.
Rated the same... 1550 CFM

But, the ShopFox is 2.5 micron and the HF is 5 micron. And then there is the ShopFox 220v at 12amps (2,640 watts) and the maybe more convenient HF 120v at 20 amps (2,400 watts) that is a full load or more on a 120v outlet. Both appear to have a 90 day warranty, but at least HF has extendable available for purchase.
Nevertheless, I am presuming that 1550 CFM at 2.5 micron is more powerful than 1550 CFM at 5 micron.... at double the cost.

Air movement ratings are meaningless. There is no standard or body that governs them. The micron sizing of the bags isn't much better. The amps HF specifies is just the breaker recommended. There are multiple reviews which show it drawing much less in action. The big difference, besides maybe quality of parts, is the impeller. You can look up "harbor freight impeller upgrade" and see how people remove the 10" HF impeller and replace it with a 12" Jet, which I believe IS the same as the Shop Fox (or Grizzly). The HF immediately starts drawing more amps, closer to its 2HP rating. I do think the Shop Fox has better parts. I think the HF just copies the design and uses cheaper parts, like a lot of stuff at HF.

The impeller is different. But unless you are going for a $1,000+ dust collection system, then I'd say go the HF route. Then you can tweak the HF version to get a larger impeller, filter, and do everything you need for an avg woodshop.
