Dicks sporting goods will price match this in-store. Just picked up one for my son. Show them the link to Public lands (above).

https://www.dickssportinggoods.co...srprxxxprf

Currently on sale for $479.98 originally $799.99.

Additional $80 off ~50% off of "Retail" for a pretty good bike.

Is Dicks a place where they service what they sell like bikes? I only ask b/c I want to be sure that the wheels are absolutely true, and if not, I don't want to have to mess with them myself. Same thing for brakes.

They are just a chain sporting goods store. I wouldn't trust their work.

I know, but surely there is a difference between the folks at WalMart that just throw the bikes together, and a slightly higher end retailer. At least that is what I was hoping for. I have never been to one of their stores.

Afterall at least Dick's offers models in multiple frame sizes where as stores like Target and WM almost never do.

The work they do is good but takes time. I took my son's bike in for a tune up and to fix a flat tire (as part of service plan purchased with the bike). It has been 8 days and they are unable to tell me when the bike is going to be ready. Mad

For us bike illiterate folks can you explain why? Which components are weak? What are better options for this price point? Thank you.

Here's three previous threads on earlier deals. Lots of discussion on the bike.

Well, it is really going to depend on the individual store.

Shifters and derailleur on this bike seem to be bad, they dont mention the exact model. Frame seems ok for the price point. As a rule of thumb I would try to find a bike with hydraulic breakes at around $500 price range, those bikes will come with better shifters and derailleur most likely. If you dont mind these factors anyways, then a $150-200 Wally bike will serve you very similar to this bike will, only it will be a few pounds heavier.

Dicks does service what they sell. Make sure you get a good representative, if you're interested in the bike. My 10 yo son likes it. It might not last forever, but bikes do need certain maintenance items over the years … detainers chains etc.

This bike would be fine for riding around a neighborhood and is okay for some non-technical trails. Any moderate+ technical trails would break something on the bike though (although to be fair, as a teenager I put a worse bike through all sorts of questionable activities and it survived, as did I). The frame is quite decent but the components are not great and the bike would need significant upgrades for any "real" mountain biking. At that point it's better to start with a better frame/bike, even if it's older.

Also, it is not an $800 bike (even factoring in recent inflation), it's maybe a $600 bike. Past sales on this were for $300 (I know, no time machines and high inflation/supply chain issues, etc.). At $400, it's not a bad bike but if you really like riding, you'll quickly want something better.

Too many bad reviews on this bike, most of which focus on issues with shifting and braking. A bike in this price range should not have those types of issues.

For me, this bike falls into "no man's land" in terms of pricing. While it's better than a Walmart bike, I question if it is sufficiently better to justify the price (even at $400). I know everyone's budget is different, but I would rather spend an $200 and get a better quality bike store bike like the Giant Talon.

Personally, I would either buy this $200 bike from Walmart, with the understanding that it is only suitable for riding around the neighborhood and some dirt paths (no aggressive mountain biking)

Or I would get this $600 Giant Talon 4

This bike is *significantly* better than a walmart bike. I have 4 of them, upgraded the brakes, rotors, and tires, and they are fully ridable on light mtb trails.

The bike is exactly the same as the giant talon 4 at significantly lower cost. It is a "no man's land" price because it is on sale (a normal sale price, yes, not a ridiculous discount) and it is sold by box stores not LBS. It is an outstanding build for the price.
