Adding a NVME SSD is almost the first thing you need to do with this machine.

There's an empty M.2 slot, which can accept a 2280 form factor "gumstick" NVME SSD (but not a SATA M.2). Spend $40 more to get one & make it as the system drive. It will greatly improve the performance of this laptop.

The 1TB "old" HDD could be kept and used as media storage…

You don't need to. License is linked to bios. So just switch drive and reload windows.

According to the service manual specs, hdmi 1.4b, so no 4k @ 60hz, correct?

Also for wifi, does it have a second antenna or just 1x1? Was thinking of adding ax200 nic.

I got this new from Bestbuy in December 2018, and just last month had to put a new battery in it. I couldn't get it to hold more than a 50% charge.

I tried everything I could figure out. Windows settings, BIOS settings, etc. gave up and replaced it.

I threw in a Samsung SSD and it's been fine otherwise.

Hello, can you tell which SSD did you put in? Is it SATA M2 SSD (or) NVMe M2 SSD? Any idea what type does it support and what max capacity, say 2 TB SSD?

NVMe, and yes 2tb would work, but much more expensive.

No USB-C video output (or PD charging). HDMI 1.4 at 4K 30Hz / 1440p 60Hz is the only output it can do, without 3rd-party DisplayLink adapters or other similar solutions.

I have bought two Team Group drives so far. The first one died in less than 24 hours. It was a brand-new drive I had purchased for a PC build; was in the process of encrypting the drive when it failed (good time for it to fail, before I was really starting to use it!). The encryption process writes to every bit of the SSD so I suspect the drive itself had a fault that I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't encrypted the drive. If I hadn't encrypted the drive, I probably could have used it for quite a while and not discovered the issue until months later. But these drives have a long manufacturer warranty (years) so if it fails after the Newegg/Amazon/retailer return policy expires, you would contact Teamgroup for support.

Since Teamgroup is based in Taiwan, keep in mind a failed drive would likely need to be shipped to them for exchange. Another good reason to encrypt the drive contents, so that they are unable to read any of your data. Just in case you do have to request warranty support, something to keep in mind.

When this drive failed (it was a Teamgroup MP33, purchased from Newegg - https://www.newegg.com/team-group...20331416), I returned it to Newegg and they refunded the purchase as soon as they received it. While returning that drive I bought the same drive from Amazon, as they could ship it to me much faster (next business day) than Newegg was able to. I received the same drive, installed in my new PC build, encrypted it and it has been working fine ever since last September. It may fail in the next 5 minutes, or could last years longer; who knows? But so far it is working well.

I bought the same drive again because I was curious about the quality and wondered if Team Group makes good products. I am not sure what happened to the first one.. guess I got a dud. It was annoying but thankfully it did fail at the right time (while building new system) so the hassle was minimal. I think if you don't need the highest level of performance and the price fits your budget, their products are worth consideration.

Figure between the ssd and adding more ram that's easily another $50-100.

Still tempted, but barely use the current laptop (2010 i5 2540m based asus w/8gb). Mostly when traveling, which doesn't happen often anymore.
