Adding a NVME SSD is almost the first thing you need to do with this machine.

There's an empty M.2 slot, which can accept a 2280 form factor "gumstick" NVME SSD (but not a SATA M.2). Spend $40 more to get one & make it as the system drive. It will greatly improve the performance of this laptop.

The 1TB "old" HDD could be kept and used as media storage…

You don't need to. License is linked to bios. So just switch drive and reload windows.

What kind of headache can I expect if I buy this for a 10 year old to play Minecraft on and don't make any of the SSD updates suggested?

What do you guys think about this compared to the Surface Laptop 3 deal that we had a couple of days ago? I have that on the way but I don't know which might be better for me, I do a lot of sitting outside in the sun so I need good battery life and a good screen. I already have an M.2 drive laying around so I don't care abut the mech drive.

screen brightness is your biggest concern. check the nits and viewing angle

That's exactly what I was thinking, they're both IPS displays so viewing angles shouldn't be a concern, HP has 250 nits, Surface 3 has just under 400. Does anyone have any idea what the minimum is for decent viewing in sunlight?

Sorry I've built PCs forever, it's the portable stuff that I've never paid much attention to Smilie

There may be a good chance that he/she will grow out of this quickly. An inexpensive gaming desktop may be a better choice (~$1,000 to $1,500).

It will simply be slower. Slower booting and less responsive. The mechanical hard drive is the bottleneck in this system. It will still be as capable, however.

Runs slow as it is. Will get the nvme ssd this weekend and will see if that speeds it up. Will remove the current hard drive and just use ssd.

Tempting, but main concerns are Best Buy cleared them out for $465 last year, so $350 seems about normal for it as a refurb, no? And a laptop deal with only 53 thumbs up here...doesn't seem like a winner.

2-5min to boot laptop from off. half a minute or a minute maybe to open any program? 10x longer time to save things. once programs are open there should be little difference. Not a big deal for a kid or used in long sessions doing the same stuff. Not great for short uses.

I agree that one should add NVME, but as someone who has been out of the updating world for awhile, how do you transfer the OS to that drive? And would it make sense to change the SATA to an SSD?
Just do a clean install of Windows. You can download the USB installer directly from Microsoft.
