Adding a NVME SSD is almost the first thing you need to do with this machine.

There's an empty M.2 slot, which can accept a 2280 form factor "gumstick" NVME SSD (but not a SATA M.2). Spend $40 more to get one & make it as the system drive. It will greatly improve the performance of this laptop.

The 1TB "old" HDD could be kept and used as media storage…

You don't need to. License is linked to bios. So just switch drive and reload windows.

Don't see mention of Thunderbolt. Assuming no docking station-like capability?

Refurbished corporate laptops!!!!
Windows 11 compatible corporate refurbs are fairly rare at a justifiable price. Anything pre-8th gen is near garbage for consumers at this point.

Also, the end user experience difference between an i7-8650u and an i3-1125 is shockingly better. Same core count, no HT, waaaay faster. Energy efficiency on the 11th gen is remarkably better, too. If you get a Precision 5530 with an 8th gen H proc, it will be slightly better performance but at the expense of bulk, wear, and nominal benefit.

I used to run exclusively off-lease gear. The "lul" in 9th/10th gen equipment changed me, the demand for Windows 11 changed me, and the benefit of 11th/12th gen did, too. There are plenty of GREAT value units in the consumer space right now that completely eliminate value for those corp devices.

I'm running an Acer Spin 3 that was $700 with i7-1165, 16gb LPDDR4, (upgraded) 2TB NVMe and (upgraded) 1TB NVMe, and a 13" Wacom Touch/Pen 2560 panel. Also has dual TB4 and a dedicated charging port. It's a better laptop that a NEW Dell Lat 5320, nevertheless an older, used one. Built better, too.

No issues here. Battery life is very good on like new laptop. Trackpad and keyboard are standard hp good quality. The backlite is very nice. It was a good purchase for us.

To add to this, given the tiny battery (yes I own an HP laptop with such a small battery) I highly recommend removing the old HDD or at a minimum disconnecting it to reduce power use. I'd rather spend a bit more on a bigger NVME than shortening the battery life even more.

I agree that one should add NVME, but as someone who has been out of the updating world for awhile, how do you transfer the OS to that drive? And would it make sense to change the SATA to an SSD?
Pull out the 1tb drive and install an nvme drive. Then, just install a clean copy of windows from microsoft's website. The serial number is registered to the device, so that you don't need a key. Tons of videos online.

After you get everything working, you could put the 1tb drive back in and format it for a storage drive. 🤷 ♂️

Or leave it out to keep your battery life the best it can be. Spinning drives eat batteries like a Game Gear.

Having played with this thing a few hours this afternoon, I'd say it's marginally faster than a chrome book.

The mech drive and OS has to go. Beyond slow. With a decent ssd performance is quite good for productivity tasks. Don't try to overload it. It will play 4K @ 60 fps via hdmi but no hdr. With hdr on there's a ton of dropped frames in youtube.

The fan will spin under higher loads. Spinning fan makes noise...

It was up for a whole month. It was an awesome deal because on the woot website it says it comes with a SD media reader and it didn't, complained about it with woot customer service and they gave me a $75 credit for the inconvenience and a $10 credit on the woot website. It was an awesome deal.

How does this HP compare to the laptop on this link ?
I see it has 512gb less but has 4gb more of ram.
Plus i wouldn't have to replace the Hard Drive

What do you think, cons and pros?

Aside from the HP's slightly newer processor & the 17 inch screen i don't see much difference unless one cares about the brand..i don't know much about the gateway ones in terms of their reliability

Brand new at Walmart $489

This one is good, but 8 gig RAM is a big let down (wish it was at-least 12) not considering the slower processor, but granted its a new one..so that's a plus..still i think for this spec better deals can be found..
