Adding a NVME SSD is almost the first thing you need to do with this machine.

There's an empty M.2 slot, which can accept a 2280 form factor "gumstick" NVME SSD (but not a SATA M.2). Spend $40 more to get one & make it as the system drive. It will greatly improve the performance of this laptop.

The 1TB "old" HDD could be kept and used as media storage…

You don't need to. License is linked to bios. So just switch drive and reload windows.

Would I be fine with just a 256gb nvme if I keep the 1tb hdd for storage?

You would boot up and shut down much faster if you make the NVMe the system drive. Using the 1TB for storage will increase power usage forcing you to go back on the charger more quickly than with all SSD or NVMe drives - this was discussed at length a couple of pages ago.

Agree. Pull the spinner and buy a usb3 enclosure for 10 bucks at Amazon.

Man this thing is a pos. Just got it and it's incredibly slow and already freezing on basic things like opening a browser. I even installed a fresh copy of windows immediately. I have a gateway with the same processor and they're not remotely comparable in performance. I literally only installed chrome and before I even did that it's was slow and edge half froze while opening. Sending it back.

I agree - if you try using this as a laptop and keep it stock you will be disappointed. I got this knowing it would need a ssd and some ram to be a productive tool - I was not disappointed. The only surprise was how badly the networking card sucked. Still, for an extra $30 I've got wi-fi 6 and BT 5.2. I have a 17" laptop with some decent specs for about half what it would cost if I bought it with the 1 TB ssd, 64GB and real network card installed at the factory. That's the value proposition on this deal. If you're just going to pull components and replace them anyway, why pay for mid-tier components?

What wifi did you install? The device only has one antenna, so 1x1.

The main issue for me was wifi speed dropping significantly once I turned on Bluetooth. It showed in the speed tests as well as regular usage, for example a 50+ minutes long 1080p video on YouTube would keep stopping and loading with Bluetooth headphones connected and then after turning off Bluetooth it would load much faster.

I've tried fresh install of both windows 10 and 11 as well as the drivers without success. Finally gave up and started a return. Liked everything else except regular hdd which is an easy fix so not too happy about spending all this time troubleshooting then returning it.
So you're fine with pulling the hard drive, installing a ssd, re-imaging Windows and foraging for drivers but putting in a new networking card is a BRIDGE TOO FAR?

Here are the networking cards known to work with this system:

L92724-005 Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 802.11ax (2x2) and Bluetooth 5 (non-vPro) [newegg.com]

L44796–005 Realtek 802.11 b/g/n/a/ac (2x2) MU-MIMO supported and Bluetooth 5 [newegg.com]

M34029-005 Realtek Wi-Fi 6 RTL8852AE-VT + Bluetooth 5.2 [ebay.com] *

If the Good Lord wanted you to only have one antenna he wouldn't let Newegg sell you two [newegg.com], now would he?

There are conflicting reports about whether the motherboard in this system has a whitelist that only allows certain networking cards to work. For best results always use parts with an HP part number (ie "M34029-005" not just "Realtek RTL8852AE-VT" without the HP part #)

* goes in and out of stock.

Lets say I update the HDD

What would be the major differences between this HP and the one at Best Buy ? (link below)

https://slickdeals.net/f/15937366-hp-laptop-intel-core-i5-1135g7-17-3-1080p-ips-8gb-ddr4-256gb-ssd-i...

Trying to figure out which is a better laptop, don't mind spending $100 more or less. Best machine under $500
The BB model has a slightly slower processor (i5-1135G7 vs. i5-1155G7) and less ram (8GB vs 12 GB). The tradeoff is that the SSD is already installed with W11 already installed. The only reason to buy the BB version over this one would be because you were squeamish about replacing the hdd and reimaging windows.

You'll probably want more ram and new network card with either choice. Some users complained about the speed of their wi-fi. My bluetooth mouse worked fine until I tried to use the laptop in my office. There were too many bluetooth devices in range so it wouldn't even attempt to connect to my mouse! Moving it to my bedroom solved the problem, but how much control do you have over the number of bluetooth devices in range once you leave your house?

Appreciate the comment but 12GB of RAM should be plenty for running edge on a brand new install of Windows and I don't see how an SSD should matter either, at that point. I didn't even load a website so WiFi also shouldn't matter, its things like the Edge window getting 'stuck' as it's opening or resizing it. Maybe I'm wrong and I'm open to learning why but I haven't put any stress on the system so see pain points from those parts.

Grabbed this. I've been debating between this and the much more expensive LG Gram. At the end of the day, I don't travel as much as I used to, but wanted the 17inch screen, so this one will suffice.

First step, installing the nVME drive.

This is the laptop I settled on.. will add nvme drive to boot from and will see if I need to upgrade the wifi card / antenna but this was right in my wheelhouse for what I wanted.

For anyone wanting to open the laptop its similar to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEFrsPVsRVA
For anyone that wants to clone windows for free: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Wml2PfkE-k

My recommendation is to just add the NVME and clone windows to it and leave the 1tb for storage, if you are worried about the 1tb using extra power then i understand, try to open the laptop carefully with no damage for warranty purposes. From ebay there's 2yr warranty, i don't know how much of a pain Allstate is but nice to be included.

If your system is slow use task manager to check disk usage, if it shows 100% then change/add hard drive.

My wifi is fine especially for normal use but you can swap the antenna, remember these are "refurbished" if you swap the drive and it still performs poorly just return it and don't stress it.

Just picked this up for my wife(lost her job/company issued laptop) and for me to tinker with.

I figured that I would add an NVMe and upgrade the RAM.

First thing to be aware of is that this thing is an absolute BEAR to open, There are (4) screws visible and another 6/7 hidden under the rubber strips(just pull the strips off to reveal the screws)...they stick back on properly

Then you have to remove the bottom.... BIG FUN. ...I used a couple of old credit cards and a broad butterknife and worked my way around the perimeter ....I thought that I would snap the cover into pieces given the amount of force that I had to use, but it was successful with no damage.

With the cover removed , upgrading the RAM was straight forward.

Installing the NVMe was another matter. There is a slot for the NVMe drive , but it is not clearly labelled and it is a weird location.(look for it, you will find it).

Snapped the cover back on , fired the machine up and cloned the HDD to the NVMe using Macrium Reflect. Both drives appear in the device manager....so far, so good.

Shut the machine down and re-booted into the BIOS to change the boot order and BIOS does not show the NVMe drive .

Seems that HP BIOS(which sucks) is configured in such a way that the machine will boot ONLY to the HDD.

After poking around in several forums it appears that the easiest solution is to disconnect the HDD and boot into legacy mode in the BIOS in order for the machine to 'SEE' the NVMe dive.

I am not looking forward to ripping the back cover off of this thing again.
