Adding a NVME SSD is almost the first thing you need to do with this machine.

There's an empty M.2 slot, which can accept a 2280 form factor "gumstick" NVME SSD (but not a SATA M.2). Spend $40 more to get one & make it as the system drive. It will greatly improve the performance of this laptop.

The 1TB "old" HDD could be kept and used as media storage…

You don't need to. License is linked to bios. So just switch drive and reload windows.

Yeah I figured it wasn't going to be too hard. I didn't actually detach the old WIFI card yet, but I didn't see any antennas attached to it laugh out loud I bought the Intel WIFI card that was posted, hopefully that solves my slow internet speeds.

Otherwise, this is a great laptop for my needs. With the NVME drive installed, it's fine Smilie I don't want to return it, so with the prospect of adding $60 drive and $15 WIFI card, I am still well under the $500 mark.
Well, I was about to say "are you sure your antenna is attached to your card?" given that I can pull 300 on download and you can only pull 8. If the Intel is WiFi 6 I would go ahead and change anyway but find that antenna wire as it must be connected to any new card

Yeah the antenna is connected. I just took the back off and verified Smilie

I only have the one antenna. Guess I am buying a 2nd one and running it.

My god, that 8mbps is pitiful - between that and the 5400rpm hard drive it is no wonder that so many of these are on sale refurbished. Mine was the right HW at the right price to backup my wife's indispensable HP 15 inch device so I'm OK with it.

Yep, I already have an MSI gaming laptop for my work computer, and an iMac for my home computer.

This was replacing my old travel laptop which was also a 17inch HP I got in 2018. It was just too heavy with the touchscreen and DVD drive. Neither of which I actually need.

Here are the networking cards known to work with this system:

L92724-005 Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 802.11ax (2x2) and Bluetooth 5 (non-vPro) [newegg.com]

L44796–005 Realtek 802.11 b/g/n/a/ac (2x2) MU-MIMO supported and Bluetooth 5 [newegg.com]

M34029-005 Realtek Wi-Fi 6 RTL8852AE-VT + Bluetooth 5.2 [ebay.com] *

If the Good Lord wanted you to only have one antenna he wouldn't let Newegg sell you two [newegg.com], now would he?

There are conflicting reports about whether the motherboard in this system has a whitelist that only allows certain networking cards to work. For best results always use parts with an HP part number (ie "M34029-005" not just "Realtek RTL8852AE-VT" without the HP part #)

* goes in and out of stock.
I bought the noted Intel WiFi card and the Dual antennas. Curious how/where you ran the new antennas inside the casing?

I bought a laptop like this for my dad from hp, same size and looks exactly the same but slightly diff. Model. Cautious to anyone who plans to install ssd drive. Opening the laptop can be a pain, make sure to use correct tools to pry open the laptop and not use a cc like I did because the plastic casing of the laptop is really soft and cheap that it will indent and leave marks making your laptop looks ugly. I learned it the Hard way. Maybe those tools that look like a guitar pick will work better, I didn't have that on hand at the time.

Getting an HP laptop opened without scratching is quite the exercise. I used a guitar pick but need a tiny flathead screwdriver as a lever to get the pick in and pop the first couple of clips. This was the most time-consuming and frustrating aspect of the whole process.

In a very strange coincidence, I upgraded to Windows 11, and while my speeds are still slow compared to my WiFi, at least now I'm 180mb down and 175mb up.

How odd.

*Update* Now I know what the issue is. For some reason, the drivers that Windows updates to (The latest Realtek ones) seem to corrupt the WiFi. I reverted back to the original Windows installed drivers and my speeds are back to "normal". I am turning off Automatic Windows Updates to avoid this breaking again.

I used the existing antenna on one connector. Carefully taped a second antenna to the bottom of the laptop with masking tape. Works fine.

I sent this back yesterday. After all my work, there's a line right down the right side of the monitor. I didn't even see it originally because I was working on replacing the drive, upgrading the RAM, swapping WIFI adapter, and reformatting windows.

Bought the Lenovo Yoga that was posted earlier this week. After playing with it in store, I am happy.

This is a decent laptop. There are some issues for some here's my experience so far.
Unit is in perfect shape looked brand new.
replaced ram with G.Skill 2x32gb cl22 dddr4-3200 ($149 ebay) -- Works fine but BIOS reports 0 mb. Windows reports 64gb 3200mhz so I am not going to investigate this further,
replaced WIFI with AX210 and an extra antenna ($22 ebay) - No issues (had to install driver) Here it is: https://www.intel.com/content/www...pters.html

replaced SATA drive with NVME ($75 Sabrent 1TB) (needed to load drivers) - No issues.
Loaded fresh copy of windows 10 on NVME.
Here's the link to intels drivers (I just put it on my USB Installation and navigated to load driver during installation). https://www.intel.com/content/www...?wapkw=RST

HP has little/no support for this laptop (this may improve), Here's the link to what's closest(that I have found)..
https://support.hp.com/us-en/driv...2100371457
The f.20 firmware from this page works fine, but offered no improvement in lack of bios options.
The HP drivers page is not great, but using a driver grabber program like Driver Booster simplified this.

BIOS is hamstrung with locked features. Throttle Stop won't work at all on this laptop b/c bios is locked down. Windows is unable to control things like HDD sleep because of lack of bios support. The menu options for advanced sleep settings are absent. I am sure there are plenty of other limitations in bios but these are the ones that irritated me the most, so far. I ended up removing the SATA drive completely since I was unable to control the sleep settings for that drive, and didn't need the battery drain/heat/weight/noise (made a good spot for the 2nd antenna).

That said, it still works well. Fan noise is bearable and much better than the i5-1035-g4 14" I have. Performance is about what I would expect, Passmark 10800 CPU and 2700 GPU.

Oveerall, a great buy for most people looking for a 17" laptop.
